You don't. Their minds are closed.

There are a huge mass of people who don't normally vote who are much easier to sway.

Turn on captions.

Around 20 minutes in the scene changes to another part of the battle. It's inside an APC and the soldiers have the door open, wanting to disembark but they're taking too much fire. Soon the APC is hit badly enough that everyone has to get out anyway...

Absolute nightmare.

Gender bias in open source: Pull request acceptance of women versus men ( www.researchgate.net )

Our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's [when their gender is hidden]. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.

Thanks for grabbing the chart.

My Stats 101 alarm bells go off whenever I see a graph that does not start with 0 on the Y axis. It makes the differences look bigger than they are.

The 'outsiders, gendered' which is the headline stat, shows a 1% difference between women and men. When their gender is unknown there is a 3% difference in the other direction (I'm just eyeballing the graph here as they did not provide their underlying data, lol wtf ). So, overall, the sexism effect seems to be about 4%.

That's a bit crap but does not blow my hair back. I was expecting more, considering what we know about gender pay gaps, etc.

Really great comments at https://peerj.com/articles/cs-111/reviews/. The reviewers are very nice about it but do point out some big issues towards the end.

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' ( kyivindependent.com )

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine's partners "are afraid of Russia losing the war" and would like Kyiv "to win in such a way that Russia does not lose," Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yeah although if Russia wins it'd involve "unstable geopolitics" too.

This could be a long war.

Spoiler:

I think the answer is community. We have to be responsible to more than ourselves. We have to feel an obligation to more than our children. It can’t just be a selfish desire to hold on to what we currently have. You can maybe grip tightly onto your comfort in the short term, but the more we resist being part of the collective solution, the less likely that collective solution is to happen. In a sense, you’re echoing a bit of this bunker mentality where we have these megawealthy people who are buying up land in New Zealand and wherever else trying to save themselves. That seems like such a sad way to see the world. Like, do you want to live in a bunker for a year eating canned rations? Is that the life we want to build? Or do we all try to make sure we have a world where there’s enough for everybody, where no one takes too much and we share what we have. I’d rather share.

Durian.

Texture of banana but with a huge seed. Tastes like a strange combination of rotten eggs, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, diced garlic, onions, cheese, and... caramel?

It's fucked. Never again.

To fascists, hypocrisy is a virtue:

https://hac.bard.edu/amor-mundi/hypocrisy-and-fascism-2018-08-12

They NEED to demonstrate their hypocrisy in order to signal to their supporters that the nasty shit they promise to do to The Other (immigrants, gays, whatever) won't be done to their supporters.

New Star Wars Plan: Pentagon Rushes to Counter Threats in Orbit ( www.nytimes.com )

The Pentagon is rushing to expand its capacity to wage war in space, convinced that rapid advances by China and Russia in space-based operations pose a growing threat to U.S. troops and other military assets on the ground and American satellites in orbit....

A 3C temperature increase will cause “precipitous declines in output, capital and consumption that exceed 50% by 2100”

Remember this is a global average. There will be places with a 100% decline.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

It might cost more overall but it will be different people paying that cost (taxpayers and poor, mostly) whereas if we took action now it would be the capitalists paying for it.

I've seen a vanload of tourists happily taking pictures of sheep on more than one occasion. New Zealand.

Will I ever be seen as truly British?

My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I'm 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. However I have a Polish first and last name, Polish passport and "unique" accent everyone picks up on, so despite this I'm usually perceived as an outsider. It makes me really sad...

You might feel more comfortable in a larger city. In London every person you meet has a different accent, it's amazing.

Russia threatens Britain with retaliation if involvement in Ukraine war deepens ( www.pbs.org )

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities and said it would hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons amid sharply rising tensions over comments by senior Western officials about possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine....

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities

This is equivalent to USA threatening to strike North Korean, Iranian or Chinese facilities (all of whom have been arming Russia). No such threats have been made.

Just so we're clear who's escalating things.

Yeah I was heavily into peak oil once, too.

Don't underestimate the power of literally everyone on the planet really really wanting to avoid that situation. Life finds a way.

No - the VPN provider has another DHCP server for use 'inside' the VPN.

In the comments on the article people have debugged their cloudflare/caching configuration for them and told them what they're doing wrong.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

The faircode model assumes that contributions from random outside people are minor and that the bulk of the work is done by the founder(s). To the founders there is little actual benefit from being an open source project, anyway. I can understand the attraction of the model in that situation.

My ideal OSS project would be receiving a steady stream of contributions from a wide variety of people without an elite sub group that considers themselves to be "the authors", which would be obviously unsuited to the faircode model. Sadly few projects achieve that and are largely the work of one person.

IMO it depends on the situation/project.

Not all servers are equal. I would trust a post from lemmy.world or lemmy.ml to have valid metadata, for example. It'd be great if admins had some way to specify trusted instances (with the biggest 6 instances as initial defaults).

There would be other uses for the trusted instances concept. Automatic sharing of moderation actions, block lists, community lists, etc

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Link previews for content from untrusted instances could still be generated just as they are now.

The centralisation that has happened is a separate issue.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

I've found that if left on default settings, CloudFlare is not that great at caching. It requires a bit of configuration to really make it sing. itsfoss.com thought they were "using CloudFlare" but probably not to it's fullest potential.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

2 requests per instance - one for the HTML of the page and another for a preview image.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

I wouldnt pay too much attention to the number of servers - 90% of them have only one user or very few users and host no communities of consequence. Most active communities are hosted on about 3 or 4 instances.

In about 6 months all the admins of those tiny instances will be considering paying the bill for the next year of domain / hosting and many are likely to pull the plug.

This process doesn't reflect a weakness of Lemmy IMO, it's just because of a certain amount of centralisation that has happened.

React, Electron, and LLMs have a common purpose: the labour arbitrage theory of dev tool popularity ( www.baldurbjarnason.com )

The evolution of software development over the past decade has been very frustrating. Little of it seems to makes sense, even to those of us who are right in the middle of it. My theory is fairly straightforward:...

Spoiler: not really envy, just the realization that they were too gormless to ever be competitive if they limited themselves to in-house resources.

First-time home buyers: how did you feel about getting a mortgage?

An option for me to buy a house has come up very suddenly and it seemed like a good idea at first - but I look at a mortgage and think "that's 15 years I'll spend paying back, at absolute minimum. Probably more like 25 years" - how can I possibly plan that far in advance?...

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

It's not a 15 (or 25) year commitment - you can sell the house any time and use the money to pay off the mortgage.

In the browser it's defined as "system-ui", which inherits whatever the OS uses as it's default font. So web pages look the same as apps.

This is the kind of inflation that raising interest rates cannot solve. They'll try it anyway.
