my memories are kinda foggy, but using Plus! in 98, some themes (like the space one) did change the dialog images, too, didn't they? (so the info bubble, red circle X, yellow triangle exclamation mark etc)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I haven't considered Microsoft Plus! as a separate software for some reason, but fair point.

I mean, fucking with the registry was always a thing in windows

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I do the same on Android

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Struggling with INI and SYS files are also kinda the same, but you are right, it was a far stretch

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

don't get me wrong, by no means this isn't shitty, it is.

I'm just saying Windows too always had its tinkering with the registry or in text files, you just normally did that on the GUI or used EDIT.

Rap was important and had a clear goal; to inspire afroamerican people, kids to learn, to live their life and fight for their rights. to get up from the ghetto, to keep on going, make them see they aren't alone, they have their backs by the community. (In the US)

this all was rather successfull.

but then, I don't know what rap's function is today. if there is any... so what you are saying, I can aggree with it, but I tend not to forget what was the original goal of this genre, and this is why I can't completely dismiss rap.

NVU, Dreamweaver were tried to be like this. Only thing that wysiwyg'ing HTML isn't that easy as one might think, especially nowadays where thousands of web css frameworks exists and every structuring is done via divs.

You could make your own framework, or select/import one you like, but then the app will have way too much parameter, which needs to be configured by the user. It would be a really neat power tool, though.

ps.: Funny thing I was just thinking about wysiwyg editors in the recent days 😅

Check MD5 sums of downloaded ISO if they provide you a sum on the webpage

it seems the internet has been geared towards people that think you have to ask the computer a question instead of searching for key words like how it used to work.

I mean, this is what we see/read in sci-fi series and movies at least since the 60's.

a long time ago I've heard that maybe the only reasoning behind the "K" is that it comes before "L" in the alphabet (L, cause of "Linux")

Idk how true is this, but I've found this "explanation" amusing.

I don't know if this memory of mine is real, or just a (day)dreaming or my brain just fucks with me, or just too much acid, but I clearly remember lots of years ago I opened GIMP and the splash screen had this fox IN A FUCKING GIMP SUIT!

Make her life a living hell. Make the company also notice, that there's something isn't just right, but it won't work if you won't make a scene. But only if they are satisfied with your work.

kuneho ,

welp, I still need to add myself to the sudo group and sudoers file, and that's something I need a root shell for. (unless I always miss some options during setup to make my user automatically a sudoer)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I mean it's Debian, it's stable, it should work without ever updating your system :P

(though one could always log in as root in a separate session, too...)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

editing files in a root desktop session with a GUI editor does count as cheating in this case?

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

oh wow, I did not know this

but that’s a pretty unusual setup

Nor this, but you are right if I think about it.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I used mostly Windows systems primarily and I guess I just adapted that habit of having an Administrator account for when shit goes down, and my own user account that has admin rights.

It's just convenient. I liked my Administrator account as clean as possible, and I do the same in Linux with root. There is its time and place where I need root.

But you are right, I should change my habits. I'm not even sure how sudo and rights and environments and sessions and god knows what works exactly behind the scenes, so probably, maybe, there are technical differences too in the way I use these and the way how I should... I don't know.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

My choice is Connect for Lemmy. (on Android)

Tried out a few; Voyager, Sync (for Reddit, it was the best), Jeroba and god knows what else, but Connect was the one that actually felt right.

it's a nice little Flutter app. it feels native (sort of) to Android. The other apps were strange to me, cause they have more of iOS UI or else, or they arw PWAs or else...

The reason why I don't use Sync is because it had strange bugs and was limited a while ago (compared to Sync for Reddit, also my purchase of it obviously lost), also has ads n shit, which is fine, understandable, if the dev would like to earn money with it, it's a cool and complex app, it worth the money.

isn't the 10th movie is Nemesis? but I'm glad you added the title as well to clarify it's not that what you had in mind, because Nemesis... well... definitely exists, that's for sure.

@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

Dear @firefox : Please stop saving images as webp when I drag them out of the browser. Forever stop that. Even if they are webp originally, just give me a setting to auto-convert them to JPEG. When I get a webp file the first thing I have to do is convert it manually if I'm going to do anything with it.

kuneho , (edited )
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

fortunately, since you use Firefox, there are a handful of extensions available just for this problem already. Maybe not for the drag n drop, though...

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

funny thing is, for some reason, it just... never came to me to just drag images from the browser and save them like that 😅, but surely sounds a logical and convenient thing to do, so I can see your frustration

In Hungarian it's the same with "home" in particular. You say "I'm home.". In Hungarian, I too say the exact same thing: "Otthon vagyok" (I'm home).

Your other two example works the same, you won't say in Hungarian "I'm school" (Iskola vagyok (it means I am literally a school)). But you say "IskoláBAN vagyok" (I'm at school) or "PostÁN vagyok" (I'm at the post office. Notice the suffix in this case is completely different, but that's another story of Hungarian)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

okay, so this means the word 'home' is actually special accross languages 😆.

and not neccessairly the home as homeland like haza in hungarian ('cause that's not even a noun (tho it is somewhat equivalent with home)), home like... your home.

Yeah, though I was like this is some behind the scenes or dvd extras material for this thread :P

From Windows to about 6 recommended distros for gaming.

I am not bad with computers and have a beginner+, maybe intermediate level knowledge of Linux and I kept running into some problems here and there with different distros. Most claimed to work out of the box (which may be the case for some users, but I have a shit ass Nvidia 1060 and that was not at all the case, until I...

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly I never expect any system to work out-of-the-box, not even Windows.

Most of the time if I see something JustWorks™ I suspect it is using some general ass drivers that may work, but with functions lost.

Probably this isn’t the case anymore, but it still gives me a lot of work to verify everything is REALLY fine and dandy.

I recently discovered Resource Monitor (resmon) can do that, too!

I was using Unlocker waaaay back, I loved it. Since then I wasn’t looking for alternatives, but since resmon also can do that, it’s more than enough.

BlackBerry was managed to run Android next to QNX somehow (BB OS10)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it was already on old enough version when it was a thing.

But to my understanding, it wasn’t emulation, rather having a compatibility layer between QNX and Android.

so AFAIK, it was rather like Proton on Linux? but maybe I’m totally wrong here, haha.

for some reason I still needed to know programming on paper so much so that at the university, in class prgramming we had to do the exam on paper. every time. no matter if it was Java or C++…

I strangely enjoyed it, but it still was kinda weird.

XSL is like that, I guess.

Some shit still use XSL at my workplace, and once I got a task with them, so… I hit up some online resources and fixed the issue.

I kid you not, from there on, I was (and still am) the XSL guy and gave me more XSL designing and work.

I mean, it’s not hard, a tiny little bit complex, but I really just spent half hour researching and some googling during work to complete these tasks, it in its own way makes sense.

But they just… aren’t willing to maintain those XSLs, because they indeed looks really ugly and scary in a way.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

then rather ‘technical issues’, since there’s no problem with the federation side of things, it’s just a software bug.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

we need to just rebuild the web, built on a decentralized LoRa or such mesh network.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Still can’t use Barrier/Synergy with it 🤷🏻‍♂️

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

I second this, having a dedicated, 2013 era machine for Kodi is more than perfect. Most plugins are maintaned and updated regularly.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

my experience with it was also kind of a rollercoaster, but libreELEC on x64 harware with some basic IGPU was the key for me.

I tried it on Raspberry Pis (OG and 3) but that surely was painful.

since using a nornal PC, I really have no issues with compatibility, even the most obscure, sonewhat recently updated plugins work no problem.

but I can feel you, it needed several chances from me too, but I needed to replace my PS3 (uaing Movian - what an amazing piece of software!) cause it had issues with some recent fullhd files.
