this is a great post. i think people have trouble understanding that great acts of violence can be born out of love for humanity. there are people in society that are threats to humanity. those people cannot be saved by love. many powerful positions are only achievable by people who lack empathy.
many people also have a hard time understanding that goose and gander arguments only confuse simple truths. we are not all equal. just because you use the same tools that evil uses does not make you evil. evil will use those tools regardless of your morals. just because you choose the high road doesn't mean that evil will do the same.
we have an obligation as wardens of this world to insure that we don't destroy it. that might mean weeding out those of us that would do irreparable harm.
anybody still waiting around for government and democracy to fix this shit is extremely naive. government is just a form of organization. we have all the tools to organize without the help of government.
because understanding the history of our technology gives anthropologists a better way to determine what we were capable of in our earliest stages of civilization. because understanding the history of us is important to understanding who we are. do you really not see the value in knowledge?

thank you. the fact that we aren't rioting to have more automated services that pass the cost benefit on to the people is something i'll never understand. we have the tools to build utopia but they can;t figure out how to make enough money from it.
It begins with wiping out the brainwashed. Theoretically, this should allow democracy to correct the problems, but i suspect the owners will just stop pretending they operate within the bounds of democracy at that point and go all out authoritarian to prevent themselves from being dethroned. Then we wipe them out.
the problem is that we not only doom ourselves with the collapse of civilization but we doom so many innocent creatures who had nothing to do with this. the animals deserve better.
hear hear! please stop fighting over the petty things and get to work on the things that matter. electing a president that will fight climate change is far more important than what happens in the middle east.
no thanks. i hate the entire concept of insurance (especially lawfully forced insurance). there's no way i want them spying on me.
there are parts of the west where there's not another car for miles. why should i be punished for minor infractions on a lonely country road when i put no one but myself at risk? this is the same as getting ticketed by a camera for running a red light in the middle of nowhere.
if the law and technology becomes a tool of oppression, it no longer serves a useful purpose for mankind.
i think that if i am going to be forced to purchase a product from the market, then the government should just provide the product. add the damages to my tax bill if i get in an accident that's my fault.
but don't make me buy shit just to function in society.
it's a scam. the money you pay in is always more than they pay out. it's a for profit industry that i'm forced to fund. it's a racket, no different from organized crime.
you know what? you've inspired me. believe it or not, i am a person who can change their mind. i'm going to play devil's advocate here and take up the opposite position to what you propose, not because i want to prove i'm right but because you've taken the time to back up your argument with cited examples. i appreciate that. should we start a new thread somewhere? i'm new to lemmy so i'm not exactly sure where the right place would be. i have a lot to do today, so i won't be able to counter you quickly.
let me just say that i'm not angry (well... i'm angry, but not at you). i recognize that we're on the same side and i don't want to disparage a fellow comrade. i respect the fact that you've had military training, and if i can prove you wrong, i hope that you would take a second look at the value you provide to the cause.
nonviolent resistance worked in the 20th century because there were still plenty of people who cared or at least pretended to care. the 21st century is basically sociopaths, dissociative personality types, and pacifists. there's no good people left with a spine and you're about to see what that world breeds. it may already be too late.
okay. tell me how you realistically think we're going to avoid the coming dystopia then. show me a practical path that creates change for the better in time to stop our destructive path.
All this completely ignores corporate greed ruining the planet. You're talking about social issues. These are just the carrots that they (the owners) dangle in front of you to appease you every so many years. This is not a path towards utopia (which is currently completely feasible). This is just social progress.
You think they're ever going to just allow themselves to be dethroned?
I'm 50. I've been watching this shit show closely since 9/11. Let me tell you, this is all just progress theater. Protests on campus? lol. They don't care. They'll just use it to justify more authoritarianism. They'll let you show your activism on social media until you get bored of it, finally cave in and become another cog in the machine.
None of you are any different from the hippies in the 60's. They will infantilize you in the media (they already are) and move on. Slow progress is just the status quo now. None of it will stop the next near extinction event that is coming.
violence was never a viable option because organizing it has been impossible for the common man. we now have the tools to coordinate globally and discreetly.
"What non-violent resistance movements of Jews were there in Europe?"
There was no resistance. everybody saw it coming and did nothing until it was too late.
"The battle for humanity’s future is fought with words, not bullets."
The history books tell a very different story. Again, naive.
"Lovely irony in you trying to call someone else naive, as all you’re capable of is cheap “we should beat up the baddies” BS, which achieves less than nothing, being in itself harmful to the discourse."
I promise you if the baddies fear for their life, they're going to be very hesitant to roll over the people. If the last time X baddie attempted some sociopathic cruelty, they ended up picking up their teeth afterwards, they will think twice about doing it again.
"I’m actually in the military reserves. I’m trained and ready to defend my country, with weapons, if necessary. Can you say the same?"
I'm armed and trained as well buddy.
"It would be somewhat naive to call someone a “limp-wristed do-nothing”
If it walks like a duck...
"some poorly defined “them”
I have a list.
Again, you're ignoring the last 4000 years of civilization if you think violence is an ineffective tool for change.

But whatever. You refuse to acknowledge that the death of any of those guys would be a win for humanity? I guarantee you we would see more results with swift action in that direction than useless protests and -checks notes- singing.
as i said in my previous reply, i'd like to really explore our differences in depth. i would like to mention now that, if you rinse repeat the process i described, no one would ever want that job and without leadership, these companies would begin to crumble and exert less influence over global politics.
