Well, usually those re-compilers or transpilers just translate the binary to some sort of intermediate language and then any backend should be able to compile it for your target system. So, in theory those handheld could be targeted. Problem with this project is that it's not just "start transpiler, load rom, click go and your port is ready". It's more like "ok, here's your game logic. Now implement the rest (or use several other projects and duct tape their libraries together to get what you want).

elvith ,

It's referring to both. The recompiler links to the Zelda project and basically tells you "if you want to haven an example how to.proceed/what to implement yourself after the recompilation finished, you can use the Zelda project as an example".

If paying on a monthly basis, as soon as you pay for 12 consecutive months, you will receive this perpetual fallback license providing you with access to the exact product version for when your 12 consecutive months subscription started. You will receive perpetual fallback licenses for every version you’ve paid 12 consecutive months for.

So, in your example, you unsubscribe in month 15. This means, you paid 14 months so you get to retain the version from month three (which is 12 full paid months to 14). This means a downgrade to 1.0.x and not to 1.2.x

I remember having a defective hdd in my PC. I brought the pc to the shop, where I bought it from to get it replaced under warranty. They told me they couldn't restore my data (I had backups) and asked if I wanted them to install windows on it. When they asked for my key I was like "FC..." and they responded "ok, we know that one, no need to spell it out" and proceeded with the installation

elvith ,

Nah, it just marks your question as duplicate.

elvith ,

The first one kinda works, but I think it'd be more clear, when used without "selbst"/self, as this would be read to reference the invention instead of the inventor.

On the other hand, that then feels like "yeah, it didn't work. The invention misfired and is crap". Maybe "Erfindungserschafferzerstörer"? (Invention's creator destructor) but that sounds off, too.

There's not really a word that I can come up with that really conveys this meaning. There's a german saying "wer Andern eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein" (he, who digs a hole for others, will fall into it by itself). Then there's the humorous "Rohrkrepierer" (along the lines of "died in the barrel") which basically means something like "dead on arrival" / that went wrong and didn't work. So it'd be probably something that references one of those, which would make it work culturally?

The FAA investigates after Boeing says workers in South Carolina falsified 787 inspection records ( apnews.com )

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday, May 6, 2024, that it has opened an investigation into Boeing after the beleaguered company reported that workers at a South Carolina plant falsified inspection records on certain 787 planes. Boeing said its engineers have determined that misconduct did not create “an immediate...

NYC has all the judges. Good judges. Great judges. The best judges in the world, I tell ya. Not like those judges from a shit hole county. And I have great attorneys. The best. They could be better, but the best attorneys that do as I tell em.

Make attorneys great again!

elvith ,

anything with a CPU in it

If we count microcontroller as CPUs, that would include basically anything that runs with electricity. But I like that thought even more that way

elvith ,

You're right, but this basically implies that you get all access to documentation. Remember the good old days, when a manual included even circuit diagrams, procedure for test points, etc?

elvith ,

Yeah, not everything needs to have a microprocessor in it, but only few items of those do really have none

elvith ,

Not necessarily. You could have a sensor that detects when the water reservoir is emptied that doesn't need logic - e.g.

  • a floater with a magnet. If it reaches the bottom, a magnet sensor detects that the water now emptied (or in the coffee pot) or
  • a temperature dependent resistor. If there's no more water, the temperature in the heater rises and the voltage rises on a wire. If the voltage (=temperature) is above a certain level you get a signal

You can then use those signals to do something like switch off the heater, change a light,... all without using a microcontroller. There's no programming needed for that. You might see things like transistors and some basic digital circuitry here but it's all very basic and still far from a microcontroller.

I mean, the hosting company would be the likely target then and they’d probably lock your account and switch off the server. Depending on your nationality and that of the hoster, at least.

If it weren’t for those pesky content breaks every now and then, they could serve even more ads. Won’t somebody think of the shareholders?

elvith ,

Also please pre-install the sysinternals suite, thanks

elvith ,

Never thought about that, but since these tools just work, when you copy them to your PC… how does psexec do that? It’d either need you to be an administrator (and then it’s not really a privilege escalation as you could have registered any program into the task scheduler or as a service to run as SYSTEM) or it’d need a delegate service, that should only be available when you use an installer - which again wasn’t was has been done when just copying the tool.

elvith ,

I found a blog post outlining exactly that. If you use it locally, it will install and start a service temporarily. That service runs as SYSTEM and invokes your command. To succeed, you need to be a local administrator.

If you try the same remote, it tries to access \remote-server-ip$admin and installs the service with that. To succeed your current account on your local machine must exist on the remote machine and must be an administrator there.

So in short: It only works, if you’ve already the privilege to do so and the tool itself is not (ab)using a privilege escalation or something like that. Any hacker and virus may do the very same and doesn’t need psexec - it’s just easier for them to use that tool.

Do you know the term “trust thermocline”?

Basically it described a problem with the boiling the frog technique. There’s a point for every user at which they’re fed up with the bullshit, lose all trust in you(r company) and are hard to impossible to get back as a customer. Every customer leaving has a little unnoticeable effect on you, but with time there will be so many people that you lost that all your tactics to lock your users in will fail.

elvith ,

I read it as “no, we won’t use your data for advertising, but collect it anyways. If you ever dare to stop paying, we’ll retroactively process this data, too”

Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Cave Johnson

Dad, are we really trying to create combustible lemons?

Yes, we arson!

elvith ,

Too bad, that its just made up. Check e.g. this video here.

elvith ,

Woah, that just turned my whole view of this image upside down, thanks!

elvith ,

Yeah, basically you have three options:

  1. Create and train your own LLM. This is hard and needs a huge amount of training data, hardware,…
  2. Use one of the available models, e.g. GPT-4. Give it a special prompt with instructions and a pile of data to get fine tuned with. That’s way easier, but you need good training data and it’s still a medium to hard task.
  3. Do variant 2, but don’t fine-tune the model and just provide a system prompt.

Donald Trump has posted a $175 million bond to avert asset seizure as he appeals NY fraud penalty ( apnews.com )

Donald Trump posted a $175 million bond on Monday in his New York civil fraud case, halting collection of the more than $454 million he owes and preventing the state from seizing his assets to satisfy the debt while he appeals, according to a court filing....

Depends on your definition of “run”. Here’s someone that sideloaded the Xbox cloud app to run doom eternal on it (streamed from the cloud).

extremetech.com/…/316177-you-can-now-play-doom-et…

On the other hand, these devices are most often just running Android. So you probably can install Doom on them. In case it’s not in the app store of the device, you could just grab an apk like this and sideload it

It gets better if you backup and then get the prompt again after the next feature update of windows - because you get asked again and if you click on it will do a second backup which means that now all files are twice in your OneDrive, then three times, then four times, then… a reminder to upgrade OneDrive further as your storage is full.

I had to clean up this less more than once now for people and even witnessed it live after doing the upgrade for them sigh

Windows doesn’t have sudo (not yet, at least) and privileges work a bit different as even as an administrator, you may not have full rights.

To overcome that obstacle, you’d need to run a shell as an administrator (hold CTRL+Shift, then use the start menu entry or right-click it and select run as administrator).

Next obstacle: We have a separate drive for each partition, but no root folder.

If we assume we’re running on a laptop or PC with a single drive and a single partition*, then it’s just

In cmd.exe:

del /F /S C:

In Powershell:

Remove-Item -Recurse -Force -Path C:

When you want to delete all (mounted) partitions/drives, you need to iterate over them. (Note that’s from the top of my head, didn’t check the script if it works).

In cmd.exe:

REM Not gonna do that, I'm no masochist

In Powershell:

Get-PSDrive -PSProvider FileSystem | Foreach-Object {
    Remove-Item -Recurse -Force -Path "$($_.Name):"
}

Done. Mounting additional partitions before that is left as an exercise for the reader.

*note that even a standard installation of windows creates 3 partitions. One for the bootloader, one for the recovery system and then the system drive. Only the latter is mounted and will be deleted by this. The other two will still be intact.

It’s not a catch all, but some things are banned from using AI and others will need an assessment before going live. Some other will not need an assessment, but serious incidents need to be reported

Why is defederation an option when Limit/Mute exist?
