A friend of mine and I were chilling in his car and listening to music.

At some point we both farted silently at the same time, but without knowing the other one farted too. It smelled horrible... like 2 disgusting farts mixing together.

The funny part is, as silly as we were then, we both also inhaled deeply, kind of to brag about "our" accomplishment... we then looked at each other confused, like "why the hell did you just inhale my fart?" ...

he then went like "wait, did you just fart?" ... "uhm yes... did you too?" ... "yes!" ... "OMG! urghhh... open the window!"

eat more meat than is healthy

What is considered healthy in your opinion?

As someone who lost 40kg by just eating mostly meat (one year meat for lunch, salami for dinner), I'd argue it's healthier than the stuff that's advertised to be healthy.

wanna build muscle? well, eating pasta and salad every day won't get you very far.

Sure, there are other protein sources, but let's be honest, nothing is more nutritional, efficient (and delicious) than meat.

I think we should really focus on the truely unhealthy shit that's out there in the supermarkets, and not on meat.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but there's the thing called PDCAAS, kind of a digestibility index for protein sources. in other words, how much of that protein can the body actually digest, the rest of it just gets pooped out.

And many plant based sources have a lower score, with a few exceptions.

Then, there's the cost factor too, best bang for the buck.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

yeah, it's such a shame that people think X is the right place to share important updates.

It fucking absolutely is NOT!

Yesterday I went to look up Trakts X profile to see whether there are issues with their API. X shows posts from 2020-2023, but nothing from 2024 even though there was a tweet from 2 days ago.

X is dead and should officially be declared as such.

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

in a nutshell

This is how the control and information exchange of smart devices work:

Phone App -> [Server] ... [Server] -> Smart Device
and vice versa

There's no way around this concept.

Now, Google gives you the phone app and the (public) server part. but these only work with their servers and apps, keeping you locked in.

HA gives you the same, a server and an app, but allows you to keep the server private (access via vpn for public)

Also who guarantees that Google Home will be there in the next few years? HA will still keep running even if it ever gets abandoned.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but I was talking about the basic concept of how things work in general to keep it simple for OP.

@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

just had a glimpse and there are also tv shows discussed? why not just move the discussions to the other communities, like moviesandtv? so we get a much larger community to interact with, instead of scattering all across.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I'd automate the shit out of this one if I were to write an app.

thinking of something like this one

  • using phones google location for tracking (or something else)
  • hava a Bluetooth beacon in the car
  • each time you get in the car, beacon connects to phone
  • app "tracks" the collected location data as "driving"
ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

you can give Flutter a try. It'd be perfect for such an app.

Israel investigates =

  • It wasn’t us
  • it was the Hamas
  • Hmm… looks like it was us
  • the IDF soldier felt threatened by the man wearing a white coat, thinking it was a terrorist. This was an act of self defense

Authelia is meant to be an SSO (like Google). In order to use it, you have to create users (and passwords) within the authelia yaml file, or connect it to light-ldap and do it via ldaps web gui.

You probably have other services running, i.e. immich, etc. These can be configured to use auhelias OIDC to authenticate the user against. you’d still need to create the users within the service, since I doubt they get auto-created.

Now, you can decide for yourself, whether to put your bitwarden behind authelia or not, and I’m not sure how the mobile apps work in this sense, if at all.

If you decide to do so, you just give your users their authelia/lightldap creds, if not, you additionally have to give them their bitwarden creds.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I’m almost degoogled, in the sense that no penny goes to them.

  • I use Fastmail for mail/calendars
  • Revanced/Smarttube for YT (no ads, no money)
  • Immich instead of Photos

The only thing I can’t really get rid of, is Google Maps.

yeah, I tried osmand, but the UI is just “meh”

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

The search is still bad, imho… If I search for a place, osmand doesn’t show the address in the list. So, I’d have to go through each of the items to find the one that I’m looking for.

I haven’t had much success with the arr-scripts, whereas with the lidarr:plugins + deemix I had.

I did not test it, but It should work, since it only pulls the albums, and is not involved in the download process at all.

Oh, and checks for existing ones, so there are no duplicates.

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Regarding enriching MB. Honestly, I don’t have time for that.

I’m from one of the slavic countries and there are so many missing albums, it’d take me a lifetime to contribute.

TIL, why my comments get downvoted. At this point, I’m not even mad.

Would you think of words that you don't know, ending with "phile" as something sexual (or negative)?

I am looking for a name for an idea that I have for a website. It is a niche hobby, but there is a greek word for it that most people don’t know. Lets say its a book club and the word was Bibliophile or a music club called Melophile....

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

When I hear “audiophile”, I truly never think about licking the banana-plugs, so nope.

There are also some popular YT channels like Computerphile and Numberphile

N100 Mini PC w/ 3xNVMe?

Not sure why this doesn’t exist. I don’t need 12TB of storage. When I had a Google account I never even crossed 15GB. 1TB should be plenty for myself and my family. I want to use NVMe since it is quieter and smaller. 2230 drives would be ideal. But I want 1 boot drive and 2 x storage drives in RAID. I guess I could...

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Any specific reason why you’d want to go with NVMEs for your storage, and not just 2.5 SSDs?

If it’s performance you’re concerned about. I have 3 SSDs in RAID (external USB 3.2 JBOD enclosure), and they perform way better than a single NVME.

For minipcs, have a look at aliexpress. They tend to have the branded options much cheaper than amazon. Trigkey, minisforum, Beelink, etc.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I’m running mine successfully for the past few months and never had an issue. The only thing to make sure, is, that it passes the serial number through. In case it goes bonkers, you can just swap it.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I run a trigkey (AMD 5700u) as my NAS (unraid) and homelab, and a CW p-5 (N305) as my router (opnsense), and have no problems at all. So they for sure boot Linux and FreeBSD, which is 90% the case.

Unlike some old second hand, new hardware is more powerful and energy efficient.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

name a feature…

No need to, they both have their place for sure… I don’t know their features, and I probably don’t even use most of them. but openwrt is solid enough for potato hardware, whereas opnsense is not. Also, my point was to show that both operating systems run on the aliexpress hardware, counteracting your claim that some systems don’t boot.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t updated bios on my main pc ever since I built it… so I think the concerns you’re talking about are more hit than miss.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

You’re comparing apples to oranges here and this has literally nothing to do with the hardware that was mentioned in this thread. They all have soldered mobile CPUs. The N100, N305, 4700u, etc.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure if I dig deep enough, I might find threads like these for any hardware.

Just look at Apple. Their MacBook lineup has been a mess since 2016, and they are a “reputable” and overpriced non-aliexpress company.

And yes, you’re fucked if you buy something from Ali and it turns out faulty. But you’re also fucked if you buy second-hand. The risk of loss is equal.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

yes, and that consistency is not guaranteed on the second-gand market either.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I’d argue that it certainly isn’t. Possibly the previous owner ran it under heavy loads, constantly, resulting in a degrading of the components.

Or they themselves were unfortunate to receive a faulty unit that started to misbehave randomly, and are now selling it after the warranty period.

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I managed to get it somehow working, but it got rejected by Flathub, because they don’t want me to build webkit and use the network during build (which I need)

I’m working on resticity, a restic frontend.

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

but it works on my PC 😅

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

TBH I’m fairly new to this. Gnome 45 sandbox has webkit2-4.1, while my PC build uses webkit2-4.0. Now, Gnome 3.38 sandbox has webkit2-4.0, but it still doesn’t run, due to missing libs. And I don’t know how to put everything together, so it works without having to re-build everything.

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Noice! I got a successfull build of a flatpak bundle (without webkit) using GitHub actions. the bundle can be downloaded and installed via flatpak install --user xxx.flatpak and it’s running.

Now I need to figure out, how to publish this to Flathub.

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

Bummer! Flathub doesn’t want me to use Gnome 3.38, since it’s EOL :-(

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

yes… since it’s way easier to distribute, amything, by anyone.

Speaking of which… I’m the official maintainer of all the crypto wallets out there… trust me, bro!

ad_on_is OP ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I had assumed, since I can do flatpak install org.gnome.Sdk and select 3.38 (there are even older 3.x versions to select from), that they left it for older GTK apps that are not (yet) compatible with newer runtimes.

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

But what about the Hamas that’s hiding behind all the Humans, and not to mention the beheaded babies. Isn’t it a bit too early for a ceasefire, since Israel hasn’t gotten its vengeance?

Oh wait… it’s elections year. Got it!

/s obviously

ad_on_is ,
@ad_on_is@lemmy.world avatar

I too swapped my HDDs to SSDs recently, and while they’re in an enclosure, connected via USB, with ZFS they perform way better than a single NVME.
