I just had parent rage remembering how my oldest's 1st grade teacher wanted to hold them back just because their handwriting was "awful", and their 2nd grade teacher decided to put all the talkative kids away in their own section so they "wouldn't disturb the good kids" because THEY ALL TALKED TO EACH OTHER! This was also the same teacher that wrote "did you even study?" on a second graders spelling test when they came home with a D (that particular week had been so hard).

Sorry for ranting, but this was prior to oldest being diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. Sometimes the teachers just see flaws and lable the ND kids as trouble makers or lazy instead of thinking they need extra help. Occupational therapy helped so much with their handwriting, medication and psychotherapy helped with the ADHD, and blue light filters helped with the dyslexia.

I'm sorry you went through all that as a child.

As a mom of a mtf child, it has been hard to reprogram my brain that they are no longer my son, but my daughter. I still love them, support them, and they will always be my baby. This internet stranger is very proud of you and wishes you the best going forward. 💛🏳️‍⚧️

I remember us having an Atari computer along with some Compac computer running DOS in the late 80s. The computers I grew up with were models that we got for free from my dad's workplace whenever they upgraded. We ran Win 3.1 until about '98. Win 95 was prevalent in the house until the mid '00s. Due to my dad's job, we always had a computer of some sort in the house.

The computers in my elementary school's computer lab were Apple 2es - in the 90s.

I didn't get a cellphone until around 2004/2005, and then it was a hand-me-down from my older sister. The Nokia 5110 - the brick, complete with extendable antenna.

I appreciate this, and now I'm just waiting for it to show me family library games when browsing the store. I have games on my wishlist that another family member owns. A flag that says "family library" would be appreciated - similar to "in library" and "on wishlist."

  • I don't see it when I browse the store on my steam deck or the mobile app. Unsure if it would show this to me on the desktop app.

Same here, but within the past year or so we’ve had to reverse course so we can stay within our grocery budget.

Portable monitor for steamdeck?

I am in need of some help. I’m trying to find a good portable monitor for my steamdeck. I don’t need it to be huge, 12inches minimum, but I’m not having much luck with my own research. I would like low latency, high refresh rate, and colors as close to the same as on the og LCD deck (which is what I have)....

Sorry for the belated reply.

I’ve seen those, or something like it. They would not work for me because 1) I wear glasses and 2) VR makes me motion sick. I really wish they would because the implementation is really cool.

Sorry for the belated reply.

For the bigger screen and portability. My eyes aren’t as good as they used to be. My gaming laptop’s fans are dying, and this would be cheaper than a new laptop (sadly, it’s also showing it’s age and cannot be upgraded further). I use my deck at home 99.99% of the time so it wouldn’t be much more to setup a monitor along with it.

Thanks for the information! I will give it a look. Sorry for the belated reply.

Thanks! Whenever I get one and test it, I’ll do my best to write up a review here on the community as an update.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

Blinkies - those small gifs that blinked to give the impression of glitter.

iframes - precursor to divs, but definitely added that “only works in IE” feel.

More contrast between font color and background image - it’s too easy to read.

12pt Times New Roman font - gotta squint to read and default font for everything

Flashy gif banner at your header and footer - bonus points if they’re the same image

All urls default to underlined blue and purple.

Mouse cursor with trails. The more sparkles, the better.

Clip art. Clip art everywhere.

It’s a thing. It’s a disgusting thing, but it’s a thing. I remember, almost 30 years ago, my parents picking out a double wide trailer and they had to check a box to NOT get carpet in the bathrooms.

I don’t have one place I work at. My job requires I travel so I do a lot of driving (minor perk is I get paid milage and drive time). I normally work at two locations each workday, and it’s not uncommon for me to commute over 100 miles round trip. Until recently I was only working two days a week, and now it’s between three to four days depending on what I have to do.

Disclaimer: I don’t get paid nearly enough and am trying to find work closer to my rural residence. Corporate doesn’t want to give raises either.

My 80+ grandmother quit 60+ years ago and still gets cravings. I wish I'd never started and had the ability to quit but I'm not there yet.

All right, I've been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager!

Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man whose gonna burn your house down - with the lemons!
