Seriously, where is the money going?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Etienne Constable, from Seaside, California, was told in July last year by local government officials that he had to build a 6-foot fence to hide the boat from view of his neighbors.

WTF? Why can they do that? If they want a fence they should have to pay for it.

@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

but without the politics and without being overly-policed

Lemmy doesn't really do anything to address either of these.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

How is that functionally different from finding or creating a different subreddit? On reddit if you got banned from a subreddit, you could just join a different subreddit about the same topic.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder what causes this? Genetics, random, maybe issues during speech development as a child?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I voted for Obama but that is an ugly suit.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Those don't do shit, it's a scam

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Anecdotal. During my dog's checkup's they always say he has too much plaque and we can use those treats that clean their teeth. We've tried several different brands and they've never helped at all.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

He chews them.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

No, I'll look into those.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

What system? PC only?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. It's the one thing I was looking for and it wasn't in the video

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, classic stroad design. Although I'm seeing it more often where it's not possible to make a left turn from the sidestreet.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I almost never remember my dreams, probably only a few times a year. If I do, about half the time they're nightmares.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Oh cool, I started using Proton calendar recently and was trying to figure out how to do this.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Isn't that the same thing Reddit did to kill third-party apps?

9 years later, I finally played fallout 4

Having dropped New Vegas in the past due to lost interest, I decided to try this game out finally since a friend of mine was having a fallout 3 playthrough himself. It was it 8 bucks, so I figured why not. I have to say, I put way more hours into this game than both other Bethesda games I've played through (Skyrim and Oblivion)...

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Did you like the settlement building or no?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I'm an optimist, but I think so. The overall trend in humanity's history is things are getting better. There are less wars, crime, hunger, disease, etc. There have been missteps and steps backwards of course, but overall humanity has been able to overcome major obstacles and I think that will continue.

It may be hard to see right now because there are so many crises we are facing, but it's always been that way, people are just more informed now.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I personally don't, because it's anonymous.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

AAA devs are spending too much money making games people don't like.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Weird seeing Stockton Rush on there when most of the other inventors are pre-20th century.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I too was surprised, since Venezuela is almost on the equator.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Pretending like addictions don't hurt anyone else is selfish and naive.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I've heard some pretty gruesome tales of bear attacks. I think these women are underestimating how bad being mauled by a bear could be.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Most of his critiques are of US infrastructure, so it would have been nice to have the conversions in the video:

30 km/h = 18.6 mph

50 km/h = 31.1 mph

60 km/h = 37.3 mph

88.5 km/h = 55 mph

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

30km/h is about 18 mph. That's gonna be a hard sell in America.

Fish are shrinking around the world. Here’s why scientists are worried. | Figuring out the reason why has big implications, with billions of people depending on seafood for protein. ( wapo.st )

The pair restarted their work in Massachusetts with about 400 brook trout reared for up to eight months in tanks. The scientists kept some of the fish in waters set at 59 degrees Fahrenheit while others at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. All were fed the same diet....

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

What's your plan to convince billions of people to stop eating fish?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

The first name that came to mind was Thomas Sowell

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Anyone have an idea how long that is?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Are you talking about the soldier or the redditor?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Corey Taylor on QI might be the weirdest mashup I've seen.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Chapelle's special's have been very controversial. I think people protested about one of them, kind of proving Seinfeld's point.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

In a lopsided enough match a team could catch it and still lose.

That literally happens in the books

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder what it would be like if passing the Bar was required to be a police officer. There would be way less police officers, that's for sure.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

It seems to very a lot from phone to phone. My current phone is terrible. It "corrects" words I don't want it to, and leaves in obvious typos.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Or when it "corrects" a word I didn't want, so I delete the part it changed and then type in what I want to say and it "corrects" it again into the same thing I just deleted. Satan could learn a thing or two from whoever invented that "feature."

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

You don't have to use credit, taxes are taken from you by force. Not comparable imo.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I think capitalism is good, but not perfect. Communism is bad.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I think human nature is inherently greedy and selfish, and capitalism is best equipped to use this in a way that benefits society. Workers are motivated to work harder and learn new skills to find the most rewarding job they can. Businesses are motivated to create products and run as efficiently as possible. Consumers are motivated to get as much value as the can out of their money. Everyone in the equation is acting selfishly and in their own self-interest (which I believe humans are inclined to do anyway) but when applied on a societal level, everyone benefits.
However I will concede that this is a balancing act that requires some level of government regulation to maintain.

On the other hand, I think communism only works when everyone acts altruistically. Which is noble, but unrealistic.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I just started a rewatch of The Simpsons. I was only planning to watch the first 10 seasons though, juat because of the drop off in writing quality.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I don't think the technology is there yet. As long as people need to wear big bulky goggles and headsets it's not going to take off. Make something that's about as cumbersome as sunglasses and less than $1000 and there might be mass adoption.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

I can't believe I'm saying this, but these companies need to pay more taxes. Losing $3.9 billion dollars on a stupid vanity project because they have nothing else to spend it on is ridiculous. Higher taxes would at least force them to be more efficient.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, I'm shocked it's that high. I've never heard of someone using one.

Gigan ,
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone in my family has one. We play ping pong.

This reads like a joke. 50 years of technological development and people are just playing hi-tech pong.

The most famous Ariel is the little mermaid, so some people might assume it's a girls name.
