Jesus is their savior, Trump is their candidate. Ex-president's backers say he shares faith, values ( apnews.com )

As Donald Trump increasingly infuses his campaign with Christian trappings while coasting to a third Republican presidential nomination, his support is as strong as ever among evangelicals and other conservative Christians....

Why did you stop at verse 26?

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

You really don't think the context of the woman correcting him, Jesus accepting the response of a canaanite woman, admitting fault, thanking her for her faith, and then rewarding her doesn't change the context of "Jesus compared a woman to a dog" just a little bit?

DaleGribble88 ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

What would you call it is someone said to another person, "No you are wrong" and the other person "Ya know what? You are right!" and then proceeded to do exactly the thing they were asked to do originally? I'd call that admitting fault. What would you call an interaction like that?

DaleGribble88 ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

Yes, but the political blowback from both parties would likely not be worth it. Especially because Republicans would immediately add double the amount Biden would, and it would very likely quickly grow into full bore shenanigans.

US prisoners are being assigned dangerous jobs. But what happens if they are hurt or killed? ( apnews.com )

Blas Sanchez was nearing the end of a 20-year stretch in an Arizona prison when he was leased out to work at Hickman’s Family Farms, which sells eggs that end up in the supply chains of huge companies like McDonald’s, Target and Albertsons. While assigned to a machine that churns chicken droppings into compost, his right leg...

Friendly reminder that chattel slavery didn't end in the United States until almost ww2, and some places still illegally enslaved black families continously since the civil war up until the 1980s. (EDIT: I thought that I remembered an old AP article online about this from the 1980s about a police raid at a farm compound somewhere in Alabama. However, I cannot find the original source for this claim, so I am retracting it. From what I remember of the story, this family had basically just kept their slaves hidden away on their small plantation during reconstruction, then just kept them hidden away from the rest of society by not allowing them to leave the compound. Someone finally escaped during the 1980s, was discovered, and eventually taken into police custody. This eventually led to the raid on the compound and the AP article that I remember.)

Then obviously prison slave labor is still an ongoing issue.

I guess not. I thought that I remembered an old AP article online about this from the 1980s about a police raid at a farm compound somewhere in Alabama. However, I cannot find the original source for this claim anywhere! So either all evidence of this event has been scrubbed from the internet, or I have misremembered the event. I consider one of these more likely than the other.

From what I remember of the story, this family had basically just kept their slaves hidden away on their small plantation during reconstruction, then just kept them hidden away from the rest of society by not allowing them to leave the compound. Someone finally escaped during the 1980s, was discovered, and eventually taken into police custody. This eventually led to the raid on the compound and the AP article that I remember.

I remember doing a lot of research into neoslavery right around when this video from Knowing Better and this video from All Gas No Brakes came out. Both videos talked a lot about slavery after the Civil War (The AGNB video was more indirect, but an interviewee in the video name-dropped a lot of stuff that I was ignorant about), which is what piqued my interest. I guess that I must be conflating a couple of different events despite my vivid memory of the article. If anyone else remembers reading the article, or the event occurring (because again, 1980-something is not that long ago), please let me know!

"We choose to go to the moon and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. This is just one of those other things." - My dad quoting JFK at me to get me to do the dishes as a teenager. I don't think he would remember even saying that to me, but has always stuck with me. Something said about something so monumental being applied to something so benign. But that wasn't the point, because it was hard for me.

browse (Old) Reddit with Lemmy style

don’t know if this is the correct community to post this on, but is there a way to style Reddit (most likely old Reddit but it doesn’t matter) with a similar style to Lemmy? there are a few small subreddits I still browse (because there is no Lemmy equivalent) and it would be cool if I could style it like the regular Lemmy...

@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

Not really, once Reddit closed off their API to all but the absolute highest of bidders, it broke a lot of functionality of a lot of smaller apps like this. You might still be able to find something to spruce up the CSS client side somewhere, but a lot of devs abandoned the ecosystem once Reddit, the company, made it clear in no uncertain terms that community support and 3rd party partnerships were unwelcome.

A friend of mine used to always make fun of me for not drinking tap water. I explained that it taste bad and that you can see the particles floating around in it. He said “no no no, the Gov wouldn’t allow that. It’s safe to drink!” I know it is safe, but the quality sucks.

This same friend stopped drinking from the tap after he moved to the neighborhood next to mine.

All that is to say that while the tap water in most areas of the US are perfectly safe for consumption, that doesn’t mean that it is pleasant tasting.

Lol, it sounds worse than it is. The water here is just very hard.

Not sure if it is a filtration issue or if it absorbed during transit in the pipes. At any rate, there is a very large chemical manufacturing plant and a nuclear fuels processing plant a stone’s throw from where I live, so the state monitors the waterways like a hawk. They’ve been busted a small handful of times over the years, but thank goodness nothing serious enough to worry about- despite what some of the other locals say.

That’s super interesting about the plants! Something to keep an eye on in the garden over the summer. I appreciate the tip about leaving the water out overnight too.

My great grandfather was aboard the USS Missouri when the Japanese came aboard to surrender. He always said that it was one of the biggest moments of his life, and he always regretted that he didn’t have a camera during that visit. I think that I would like to go back in time to that event, and bring a camera with me.

I was really active in that sub at the time. Fox or CNN or something contacted the moderators about an interview. The mods discussed it and decided to decline. IIRC, they later made a post about not accepting interviews until they felt they were more ready to present clear goals, and maybe pull someone from the community to be a “official” spokesperson.

Then a mod went rogue and did the now infamous Fox interview. That was bad, but recoverable. It was further shenanigans by the moderators in the immediate aftermath that caused the schism into work_reform. Before my exodus from reddit, I followed that community closely, but never got as involved. At the time, I remember thinking that the mods felt more reasonable than in antiwork, but that quickly changed too. Eventually they effectively became mirror subs.

Then RIF got shut down and someone told me about this lemmy federation where I could post about all the gay space communism and fringe technology I wanted. I think that I am happier now overall.

'Don't parse markup languages with Regex' is an annoying trollpost and it should die... right?

Look 0 of my work involves HTML, well maybe 1-2 percent does; however, about 60% of my work involves regular expressions, grammar, lexical scanning and syntactic parsing, so it still irks me, and will irk me beyond my grave, when people say shit like ‘Don’t parse HTML/Markdown/etc with regex! Use a parser generator!’...

From someone who transitioned from operations to development over the course of their admittedly short career, this is a poor mindset. Much like how you shouldn’t disrespect a janitor or a nurse, you shouldn’t say “gross” about IT work.
IT may not be the reason for the company’s existence, but it is what allows it. The company may not exist without you, but you don’t exist without IT.

And if you think Starship Troopers is some sort of woke propaganda, then I can’t help you. Don’t try to ruin a perfectly good game with pandering wokeness just like you all tried to do with Star Trek.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn’t use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don’t agree to their terms, then I don’t get access to their new products. That...

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

I’m pretty sure that you cannot use a roku-enabled device for any purpose until you agree to their terms of service, which just puts me back into the same boat.

Do you have any recommendations for actual dumb TVs?

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

I think that I’m about to sold on LG TVs. Do you need to agree to any terms of service for initial setup? Additionally, do you have to navigate menus on startup to get to the streaming device? If so, that is ok, but very annoying if I can’t set it up to start on a particular input on power up.

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

Hmm, yes, I agree! Totally agree on this. No argument. I’m curious though - what TV would that be? What TV can someone buy today that doesn’t require an initial setup process that requires an agreement to certain terms and conditions prior to use?

Not trying to be hostile towards you in particular. I’m feeling frustrated with this answer because I am seeing it a lot (both online and in online searches right now), but I’m having some difficulty finding it actually useful advice. Many devices are setup from the factory to not allow use until agreeing to certain terms and conditions that must be agreed to before using the TV. I need to know which TVs - if any - do not require this. It is surprisingly difficult! I feel frustrated with this answer because it feels reductive & dismissive of the actual problem.

Again, nothing against you in particular. I’m just frustrated with this - seemingly reasonable but not actually applicable based on what I have been able to research online so far - answer.

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

We found an answer! Thank you!

I’ve been searching online between comment responses looking for actually useful recommendations. It looks like Sceptre or LG are going to be good starting points. Between the two website, I’m leaning pretty heavily towards the Sceptre. I’m excited to here more from the person posting about the professional/commercial AV displays.

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

This is really good/useful info - thank you!

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

IKR? I’ve been pretty happy with their service up until now. Sure, the home menu ads were certainly annoying, but were easily ignoreable and didn’t interfere with normal use of the TV.

It’s weird, I don’t mind waiving rights when I know what I’m in for. (I’ll sign the release form when I do something inherently dangerous.) However, I don’t like having the deal changed out from under me, and I certainly don’t like not being given a choice. I should have had the ability to hit decline, then forfeit my right to access roku on-demand services and maybe even firmware updates. But, whatever I had installed and working with 3rd party services shouldn’t be affected. They shouldn’t be allowed to disable the hardware. Honestly, and I mean speaking from the heart here, I probably would have just clicked OK without much thought about it if they’d at least included the disagree button.

How on earth is saying “I would prefer not to do something” being unreasonable with people?

DaleGribble88 OP ,
@DaleGribble88@programming.dev avatar

IANAL either, but I’m pretty sure you are correct. I put it in another comment somewhere, but I’m more upset about not being given a choice to refuse the change rather than the actual change itself. I don’t mind signing the waiver at amusement parks, or to buy a car with no warranty. I just want to know what I’m agreeing to, and I don’t like folks pulling the rug out from under me or changing the deal.

The situation feels like if I were to drop out of college, I would be given electroshocks until I’d forgotten anything learned in class.

“I wish my cancer riddled grandmother wasn’t suffering.”

“Well, you could always just kill her! Then she would feel anything!”

???

Even more so, I didn’t even disagree or say that they were wrong. Just that I’d prefer not to do that because, along with my grandmother not suffering, I also want her to be alive. Contrary to popular belief, humans are capable of wanting multiple things at the same time. Have you ever been thirsty while you had to pee?
