Jeff Bezos revealed his secret to Amazon’s success 25 years ago: ‘I asked everyone around here to wake up terrified every morning, their sheets drenched in sweat’ ( www.cnbc.com )

Back in the 90s, Jeff Bezos went on record as hoping his employees would wake up on the wrong side of the bed—for the greater good, or for the customer at the very least....

Any of them before soil depletion and banana blight. Fruits and veggies tasted so much better in the 80s. Melons in particular taste lifeless now. Once in a while I strike gold at the local farmer's market or in our own garden.

OMG, yes. The flavor "wet" has been added to my lexicon.

Single standard door refrigerators are better than french door.

Single door is nicer bc you only have to open one door, the french doors you often have to open both bc they are too small to get to things unless it's in the door compartment. Opening or closing both doors with things in your hands gets old, and if you want to get into the meat drawer you have to open both sides fully then...

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

I respect your preference. But after living with a dozen single door fridges and now one French Door fridge, the French Door fridge wins hands down for us in our house. We all much prefer it. Just fits the workspace much better.

Yes, the flappy door thing did wear out after several years. I replaced the $4 spring and voila, good as new.

Empathy and decency are scarce precious commodities. But the ruthless predatory "thought leaders" have been in charge ever since we clubbed the last neanderthal.

"It Was Just Business" should be engraved on whatever memorial is left behind to mark our self-extinction.

Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term?

I've been wondering for a bit why during the time the Democrats controlled the legislature, executive, and judicial branches during Obama's first term in 2008 more wasn't accomplished. Shouldn't that have been the opportunity to make Row V Way law and fix the electoral college? I understand the recession was going on but outside...

Routine abuse of the filibuster rules by Republicans was a big part of it. Not the only reason, but a fairly major one as I recall.

And while I am a Democrat and I vote that way, I very readily admit the Democrats often bring a book to a gun fight when it comes to politics. They have good intentions but then they get steamrollered on things like SCOTUS appointments....

Exclusive: Bank of America banker who died had sought to leave, citing long hours, recruiter says ( www.reuters.com )

The 35-year-old Bank of America (BAC.N) investment banker who died from a blood clot earlier this month wanted to leave the U.S. bank because he was working more than 100 hours a week, according to an executive recruiter who spoke with him about seeking a new job.

I'm curious if the trend will flip again at some point. I definitely find dark mode to be easier on my eyes for a lot of stuff, especially coding. But I don’t rage when it's not available.

I'm old enough to remember dark mode being the default because of monochrome monitors. And then later, people were ecstatic about the faux-paper-on-the-screen concept, and dark scrrens were very passe for a period.

Wouldn't shock me if some future monitor tech that looks more like paper and ink flipped the preference/fashion again back to light mode.

When I use Obsidian, for example, I tend to like themes that look like papyrus or sepia type tones. Not too bright or too dark. Just kind of relaxing, to my eyes anyway.

American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse?

Hi there, I'm a registered nurse in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm seriously considering moving abroad because this country is driving me insane for a lot of reasons. I was considering moving to Israel since I'm Jewish and I've heard they have a better healthcare system there and pay nurses well but this war has made me not really...

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry if this seems lazy, but Canada has a decent population of Jews. Since you are a nurse, you have a better chance of getting in. Obviously there's a ton of paperwork involved, but might be worth looking into.

If you speak French, France might also be a good choice. Hella good worker's rights there.

I think humans (like all animals) are fundamentally flawed for several reasons. Animals, including us, are programmed to procreate and consume and (for some species) construct things. It's all about survival and thriving. All animals all have a general "I got mine, fuck you" mindset.

We despise cancer for its brainless infinite growth programming...when our operational model is hardly different.

In short, I think we're all a bunch of selfish idiots competing against each other and other life forms. There is no greater purpose or benevolent spirit watching, much less cheering us on. Where there is life, it's just reproducing and eating and dying and repeating that cycle for as long as the local environment allows.

So no, I don't think the good in humankind will prevail. There's evidence all around that goodness is losing the battle to greed and other self-destructive tendencies. Things which are hard-wired in the human animal. Don't look up!

Is that an excuse to not even try? No, I don't think so. I think we are still morally and ethically obligated to always strive to do better and fight against that brainless animal programming. Even if goodness ultimately fails, it can greatly reduce suffering along the way. And perhaps keep the concept of a new "enlightenment" alive long enough that we do eventually figure out a way to break out of that animal programming and build some kind of egalitarian utopia. Because there is also evidence all around us of people performing selfless acts of self-sacrifice to help others.

I think the chances are very, very slim of that utopia ever happening. Because quite frankly, evil is like a force of nature and goodness is like a guy with a shovel and a plan. But I do think utopia is theoretically possible.

In short, I think it goodness will not prevail, but I would love to be dead wrong about this. I hope goodness wins.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Sources?

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Some good and encouraging stats in there. Most of which do little to undermine my position about fundamental human nature.

Article last updated in 2018. The war in Ukraine, genocide in Gaza, rising inflation, food and petroleum shortages, global warming, mass extinction of myriad species, and ascending fascism are all pulling these graphs back towards regression to the mean, I'm afraid.

The media tends to overstate these things on the crime and despair side, I will quickly admit that. But there's plenty of wishful thinking and denial coming from psychologists and sociologists (and often-cited airport books) on the other side.

Pinker and others in his camp were/are arguing that giving more power to the state helps mitigate and even reverse many of these social issues. I agree with them on this. But, the staristics and context of the underlying data is a bit dubious.

Appreciate the article. Thanks.

Boozilla ,

It varies depending on your email client and the fake phishing service / implementation. (Sorry, I hate non-specific answers like this, too). For me, all I had to do was add an Outlook rule that looks for a certain keyword in the email header. The keyword is a weird/unique string that's only associated with the fake phishing company. If that word is anywhere in the email header, my rule chucks it into a folder where I just ignore it. Your client should let you view the header / raw email and you can look for a pattern that way.

It's a pretty safe rule as far as email rules go. The only risk I can think of is that it could lull me into complacency, but working for the man does that, anyway. I've been getting away with it for over a year, and it's nice not seeing the dumbass fake phishing things. Note that we are not mandated to report them, but we get assigned extra training if we click on any links in them. Your employer may have different rules.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

That's really funny. It's like you work for Dunder-Mifflin.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Even a smart person can have a bad day / moment of weakness. If you are super busy / stressed out and some email comes that looks like a bullshit request from HR or IT or whatever, it can be tempting to just try to knock it off your plate real quick so you can get back to whatever fire you were fighting.

My tactic these days is I pretty much don't click on ANYTHING in an email, so it's an ingrained habit. If it's a link to something, it's usually one I can navigate to myself using my browser. If it's an attachment, we use a file sharing system that stores these so I can just go to that and see what's in there.

It's inconvenient, and you don't always have these work-around options, but by trying to make into an automatic habit, it has saved me a couple of times.
