The psychology on caring about some useless pixels is strange.

warm ,

What are some reasons as to why I would want to use this over, say, OSMAnd?

warm ,

I like OSMAnd's visuals, very simple and configurable. OM seems to just be material design. Subjective of course!

warm ,

I see, that's very useful for lower end devices then. If I ever need voice, I'll stick to OSMAnd then for now.

warm ,

Not that big of a deal to me personally, the app is still brilliant and open to the community. But given the community this is posted in I understand the concern and alternatives like Organic Maps are great for that.

If you are talking about Vortex, it is no gold standard... it's a fucking bag of shit. Mod Organizer 2 is far superior.

Also the speed limits on Nexus suck and big mods like this wont do well on there if no one can actually download them in a reasonable amount of time.

warm ,

MO2 is just better in every way. It's visually simpler, less confusing and functions as you would expect - drop the mods in and swap the order how you please. Creating mod profiles is easy and it has very deep advanced setup if you need it. Vortex just causes unnecessary roadblocks and troubleshooting steps. MO2 (to put it) "just works", try it if you haven't, it solves all the issues you just listed.

warm ,

For other games with large modding communities Nexus Mods is often not the main site.

My favourite modding setup I have seen has to be Thunderstore with r2modman (initially Risk of Rain 2 modding, branched out to other Unity games), ridiculously simple and functional. All FOSS too.

warm ,

We will have to agree to disagree. I had a much easier time explaining the setup of mods to people through MO2 than Vortex.

They are buying studios and their IP so no one else can use it, even if they don't use it themselves. It's a strategy to remove competition, they don't care about the industry and the players, they care about money. All these big companies are the same, Microsoft just have the wallet to act on it, avoid them all and buy indie games.

warm ,

they could care less

So they do care then!

warm ,

Apple copy Samsung too, Apple just has good marketing and gives random names to standard tech to make it sound like its something amazing you should care about.

Samsung wanted to sell wireless buds too, so they also removed the 3.5mm port. At least their SD card slot stuck around for a bit longer. They could release a true flagship if they wanted with a 3.5mm port and an SD card slot, but why would they when millions of people buy their phones each year anyway?

Both are shitty in their own ways, but at least Samsung is Android.

warm ,

That was a good change. I'd argue even removing the cable would be a good change. Less e-waste (even though releasing phones every year is e-waste enough).
The bad thing was Apple then selling a charger at extortionate prices, you didnt have to buy theirs though.

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones,...

warm ,

The Sony Xperia phones offer IP68 with an SD card slot and a 3.5mm port. They just have poor software support and cost a shit ton.

warm ,

That's good then. Still kind of low, but not terrible like before.

warm ,

Still haven't updated to the new update. You just have to swap an app manifest file, takes 5 seconds.

I'm not sure why people with modded setups updated, I guess they had yet to learn that lesson.

warm ,

The one before the 'next gen' update.

warm ,

The world is great to explore. Lots of hidden goofs to uncover, but yeah, you play New Vegas for story.

warm ,

They give that data away to hackers for free almost every year too!

warm ,

When autonomous cars are good enough to just drive people around then yeah the companies should be liable, but right now they're not and drivers should be fully alert as if they are driving a regular vehicle.

warm ,

Replies aren't always in disagreement! I agree with what you are saying, just adding on my thoughts on information further up the thread too.

warm ,

If the car is fully autonomous, yes.

It's still in its infacy, eventually it will replace humans entirely and the roads will be much safer. Right now it's just like improved cruise control and kind of pointless.
Some manufacturers have already said they will claim full responsibility for their cars in self-driving mode, which makes sense to do.

warm , (edited )

You choose to activate that mode, while I understand your sentiment and do agree, it's not as cut and dry as 'company liable' or 'driver liable', both can be at fault. Taking blame off drivers entirely could make people even less attentive and the safety of lives is more important than some fines to a car manufacturer.
The real problem is that mode being allowed to exist at all. It's clearly not ready for use on public roads and companies are just abusing advertising to try and pin their 'autopilot' as something it isn't.

Also note: Some manufacturers (Volvo & Mercedes, that I know of) have already said they will claim full responsibility for their cars in self-driving mode.

Getting into Civ 6

I got into Civilization rather late with their fifth entry. I was hesitant because as I get older I need more time to game than I do new titles. Still I picked up six with all DLC during the last sale. I have to say I am liking the changes. It was good to wait because Civ does need its DLCs to feel complete....

warm , (edited )

5 is superior imo, it's more simple to understand but has a lot to master. It's more visually appealing too, Civ 6 throws so much extra crap at you.

5 is more depth from simple mechanics. 6 is adding mechanics to try and make depth.
I'd recommend 5 for sure, though 2K are kind of scummy and put 6 on discounts to try and force players into that and no longer really put Civ 5 on sale cause they know people would rather buy that.

warm ,

Yeah, 5 isnt too bad unless you got loads of units late game. 6 overwhelmed me from the get go.

warm ,

Maybe, there's a lot of games that have computer made voices for robots and stuff before the AI boom.

warm ,

Unless you are in an area with low light pollution, it doesn't look like it does in photos. You can't exactly increase the exposure time of your eyeballs :D

You see like purple/orange streaks in the sky, still beautiful, but the cameras exaggerate it.

warm ,

I dont have a pixel, but if there's like a "pro" mode in the camera app, you can play around with the shutter speed and expose for longer. After the event the sky looked normal, but I could still get the purple green with my phone camera!

warm ,

Thats the true dream!

warm ,

This might be one of the worst designed maps I have ever seen...

EA is looking at putting in-game ads in AAA games — 'We'll be very thoughtful as we move into that,' says CEO ( www.tomshardware.com )

EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed the company is considering putting ads in traditional AAA games — titles that players purchase up-front for around $70 apiece. In the Q&A part of EA’s latest earnings call, Eric Sheridan from Goldman Sachs asked Wilson about dynamic ad insertion in traditional AAA games. Wilson said,...

warm ,

The masses will buy any game thats marketed to them enough. It's how we got into this mess in the first place.

warm ,

If they are fullscreen ads that disrupt, then yeah pushback is expected. But they wont do this, they will slip them in slowly and people wont generally care.

Pushback from gamers only usually happens when its something like losing the ability to play the game - see recent helldivers controversy.

There should have been a pushback on microtransactions from the start, but people just said "well you dont have to buy them" and here we are.

warm ,

There's already types of ads in video games. Fortnite is full of them in the way of 'crossovers' and virtual music festivals. Death Stranding had Monster Energy in. There's probably more too, they do it subtly and EA would start with their sports games, selling ads to show on the pitch for example like what they do IRL.

Hey guys, I just wanted to share that I made a browser extension that enhances the ChatGPT UI ( lemm.ee )

It's not the most fancy thing out there, but if you're still using ChatGPT 3.5 and are looking for something a little different, why not give GPThemes a try? It's a free and open-source browser extension for Chrome and Firefox (Desktop and Android) that'll give your ChatGPT website a fresh new look....

warm ,

I'm not a fan of modern web design at all and by extension of this design, but the idea is a good thing for practice!

warm ,

Yeah, the franchise has been on life support since Bungie left, they should have just licensed the IP to other studios.

warm ,

As games sure, they were alright. But they werent Halo games. Its one of the best trilogies of all time and ODST and Reach were also great additons. I think 343 dropped the ball massively and at that point just licensing the IP could have yielded some good games too as it was already tarnished anyway.

warm ,

They saw shitty Rings of Power did well.

warm ,

The game should be offline co-op anyway (and P2P). So many co-op games just made 'always online' for the sake of MTX.

warm ,

I present to you: Helldivers 1.

Its just an arbitrary mechanic added to justify an always online requirement. Helldivers had an offline option. There's still a game there without the need for "community involvement", the missions etc could be completely random or seeded for people who dont want to connect to a server.

Its always sad to see potential great games ruined by greed.

warm ,

You are right, it does provide something. I just personally don't value it over a more typical online co-op setup. I just wish options weren't scary and implemented more.

warm ,

That says more about the core gameplay than the community feature.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

warm ,

Why do they believe you only find protein in meat?

warm ,

Sony being scumbags? Who saw that coming? They definitely don't have that reputation...

warm ,

This is one of those shitty products that you can see being shitty from a mile away, yet all the coverage and discussion around it gives it a life it otherwise wouldn't have had.
