At this point? Industries who had to raise their prices due to a large number of concurrent issues a while ago didn't drop them afterwards keeping the difference as profit. They're now still raising their prices without any economic factor driving the need to. To the common person, the main contributor is the supermarket.

Putin's war does slow Ukraines food output straining the international food market. However, this is a minor factor which has been mitigated, and even if the war ended today the market has shown nobody will lower their prices.

Profits drive inflation.

@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hey man, I understand the confusion and would like to correct some notions. Particularly with some comments here conflating socialism with other ideas.

Socialism is simply workers controlling industry. This may mean many things including each business being controlled by it's individual workers, all industry being collectively owned by society as a whole, or other similar ideas. Personally I believe in the former. As long as the people working in a business control said business this is socialism

What if that industry is the rental of tractors? Well, then all workers involved in this business must control the business. If you are the sole worker, the only one operating this business, then you have sole control.

If you were to, let's say, buy 10 tractors and bring on a receptionist to manage calls and schedule tractor usage well then that receptionist would also own, and control, this business as well. Same goes as it grows. Just as a person selling wheat to a grain mill doesn't need to hold any ownership over the grain mill nor the mill over the farm you selling your tractors usage doesn't need those using it to own your tracker.

Socialism does not necessitate the collective ownership of property nor does it mean industrial rental isn't an option. It only necessitates that the workers control industry. This may mean that each individual business operates as it's own entity, controlled by it's individual workers.

Workers seizing the means of production can mean does not mean, necessarily, society owning it collectively nor does It mean all who use it may have ownership.

I feel that socialism and communism often get conflated. Private ownership of property and the means of production is allowed under socialism, just not ownership over industry. You can personally own and rent out a tractor but you cannot personally own a tractor rental company. Under communism, all is owned collectively

Now, the morals of renting are another thing altogether and entirely detached from socialism. Personally, I think it mostly immoral. Under your circumstance I see no issue selling excess time with a tool you use for the majority of the time. The issue comes when a single renter start to pay entirely for maintenance with excess profits. In my opinion, this should grant them partial ownership. Once more though this is detached from socialism entirely

sorrybookbroke , (edited )
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

To answer the "are you a boss" question the answer is kinda, but yhat's the idea of socialism. Everyones a boss. The idea is against non-workers owning the industry, and ensures workers have control over it. If you see an issue with your suggested practice I understand but I'll clarify it' not anti-socialist. At your scale, with the other options available, I can only see your option being a better one.

I think you see the possible issues inherent in renting as well as the coercion in it. There's certainly ways in which one can exploit the relationship. As long as you're not doing so however there's no moral flaw. In fact, on an environmental note you're likely helping. If you're undercutting the massive industry and treat those who rent from you well you're doing them a kindness.

Of course, one can do evil here, but understanding that and actively making effort not to do so is a good place to be in. All economic activity can cause harm no matter the system. As a socialist, I believe that when more people with a stake in the work have control over industry the outcome is better

@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

That guy in the bottom doesn't want to eat the rich, he's an anarcho capitalist. He wants microsoft to be free from those pesky regulations stopping it from collecting and selling every tiny piece of information it can get it's hands on

sorrybookbroke ,
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nah, that just means they can take whatever they want from others too. Now they own all the smaller projects as well, and any changes they make to linux don't have to be shared. Linux is now winix, and they've paid the computer companies to nolonger allow linux to be installed at all via hardware. What, that's anti-competative? Yeah, who's gonna stop them? You? You don't have the resources.

What, could you make a windows clone? Could you then out-compete the multi-billion dollar company in the market? What PC would allow you to install your windows clone? Also, Microsoft now owns the land you live on. You must leave, they are the owners of that land and thus make the rules. Want to fight back? too bad, they own the private police force too. Policing is an industry, and currently the government has a monopoly over it. Without regulations they're now a free org who takes the highest bid. You don't have enough money to live while copying Microsoft Windows. Nobody does.

What? Another company will use they're resources to compete with windows? Why would they win? Microsoft has more resources, will buy more output, will pay more companies for exclusivity, and can have them put a system in to brick the PC if you try not using windows. Sure, they may be able to get a small industry set up, but none of what they make will inter-operate with windows and now this small fraction of PC users is isolated. Why would anyone switch?

No, anarcho capitalism won't stop Microsoft's existence because of copyright. Copyright in many ways protects smaller orgs more, and with no other regulations stopping the big orgs from stomping out the small orgs it won't matter. The only possible fight would be between the titans and when one titan wins, that's no more helpful to the small people.

sorrybookbroke , (edited )
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

But they are now, they exist currently. The fuck are you talking about. If we became an ancap society they wouldn't magically disapear. What, you think that any ancap would ask for these companies to disolve before they're society started? To go back to square one? Nah, that's not what the guy pictured or any popular ancap has suggested. That's not randian, that's some fantasy. Rands suggested solution necesitates the lalrger corporations gaining control. To be allowed to freely operate. Name me one ancap thought leader who suggests a mass reset and that in no world a large corp could form.

Also, even if ancap sociaty started from scratch eventually a company would gain power over an industry. With nothing to stop them, the biggest companies would inevitably grow bigger. That's capitalism, the need to grow is constant and one cannot stagnate. Not neccessarally a bad thing but with no guide rails it logically means monopoly. No, a lack of copyright law wouldn't stop any company from growing to a size where they could kill competition.

When there's a new industry too, they'll be the ones to pioneer it. What, do you think Microsoft came fully formed from bill gates forehead? No, the current companies at the time would have taken gates designs and copies them. They, with their distribution networks, would easily outcompete. What if bill made a better product? Well, no copyright, it's now theirs.

I'd say plasma has similar or possibly mildly better performance than win10. Any time I put it on older hardware it seems to bog it down quite a bit

Amd can be quite hard to work with as a small vendor and even though they have a current product with them it takes alot of time, and money to get a new one. If they can

The excuse, which I believe, is that AMD is relatively small and can only do buisness with so many people Whereas nvidia is massive, and multiple smaller companies along with the main one will be in a much better place to supply GPUs.

Completely agree though, I would much prefer an all amd option.

The issue is that this data can be used to fingerprint or de-anonomize users. Even if it's just a big list of statistics, knowing how likely or unlikely a system change, setting change, version, etc. is can help greatly with a person looking to pin down users. They'll know how likely a person with a specific pattern is the same person.

I'm glad it's not distributed. If it was, I'd slide it all the way back to 0. Good intentions from the collectors doesn't stop bad intentions of consumers

Should I join "free speech" alternatives?

Hello! I've been searching for a reddit alternative, and yes, I've picked Lemmy and Raddle, but here's the thing. My morbid curiosity is perked up, and a part of me wants to join the "free speech" alternatives, like Saidit, Poal, etc. What's wrong with me that I want to join toxic places? I mean, yes I'll find a whole new...

sorrybookbroke , (edited )
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good luck man, you're about to learn how easy it is to get banned on those free speech alternatives. Still funny though.

Be careful however. No matter what, you're still just a brain in a flesh jar. You are susceptible to false information and lies as your brain can't really differentiate between false and correct info that well.

You are not immune to propaganda

sorrybookbroke ,
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

It isn't about the greater idea, it's about the small lies you don't know you're accepting. Of course that isn't to say you can't engage at all with this content (I certainly seek out people who disagree with me.) as you say, with constant effort and confirming everything you'll catch most of it. No matter what you're going to end up believing something without confirming it or even realising it. Good propaganda goes unquestioned. It seems like something obvious, small, and in some base way unquestionable.

In a torrential downfall there's no way to catch each raindrop, no umbrella that can block it all. You are going to get wet, even just a little.

sorrybookbroke , (edited )
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

How is this different than leftist propaganda?

It's not. In no way, shape, and or form. Once more, you are not immune to propaganda.

Again, I'm not stating you shouldn't seek out people who disagree with you, I seek these people out often, but you need to understand what your brain will do.

You should generally be cognizant of bias and the fact that you will, inevitably, accept without confirmation some information or internalize information you've confirmed incorrect. This is not only true to one group, and is just as true for those under the umbrella of "leftist" as much as under the term "alt right".

I will state it's less dangerous to be less cautious here than a free speach absolutist community. Here, we value truth. There, they value all speach even objectively false. Here, you'll see false info removed there, definitionally, or is not.

Lastly, for fascism, death of truth is a defining reality. To paraphrase Mussolini let not truth stand on a pillar except insomuch as it assists in our goals. In the places where absolutist freedom of speach reigns fascists, famously very good propagandists, thrive. This is a danger above a left winger repeating false statistics around racism in the police force, or the rates of spousal abuse. Or even myself lying about that Mussolini quote at the beginning of this paragraph

Thank you for the responce however and the respectful tone you took, I hope I clarified>

Wayland is a display protocall. What does that mean? Well, it describes how a program on linux tha displays graphics to a user should work. Examples of programs which do this include kwin, mutter, and sway. It's why you see stuff on your monitor and why when you open an app, it's in a window, which can be moved.

All that along with a good amount of supplementary tools, makes up wayland.

Currently we are transitioning from a 40 year old protocal called X11 which has many issues and few people willing to work on. Wayland offers a codebase without the spaghetti, more security, easier feature development, and to a point backwards compatibility.

Pit bull is a large category which many, completely unrelated breeds can be classified as too. Entirely different genetics, from entirely different regions, with entirely different temperaments.

Sure, if a person lumps together any dog that kinda looks like it belongs in the bully classification, you'll get pretty high statistics. Especially when you compare against singular breeds like a rottweiler.

If you look at the graphic (which states 67% not 90) "pitbull" makes up atleast 8 breeds, though like many others I've read my assumption is that they're still classifying many breeds as a singular breed.

You need to look at per-capita data by the way, even if you didn't need to separate the breeds. With simply this data, there could simply be more pitbulls in existance than other breeds.

sorrybookbroke ,
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

This graphic lumps together at least 8 breeds under the umbrella of "pitbull", which is rather strange. Sure, if you group many breeds into the same category before comparing it to a singular breed it's going to look bad.

Also, you need to show per-capita to prove anything here. Sure, the absolute number may be high, but how does that compare to the absolute number of pitbulls? How does that compare to the per-capita of other breeds?

"Why identity politics bro?"

Says the first guy to bring up identity politics in the thread.

The article didn't say shit about gender you weirdo. You have hallucinated this.

Half the article, or more, is a description of evengalian plot. That's some wild shit man, none of that was in any way relevent. Imma use this tactic myself.

"I'm sorry, but I am breaking up with you. You do deserve an explination as to why though but to properly convey my emotions first I'll have to describe the entire through plot of blues clues"

sorrybookbroke ,
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

You're wild man, complain about everybody bringing up identity politics when none were present ironically being the one you complained about.

I haven't been following this story personally, but if they had decided to "push back on representation for trans people" that is a bad thing. Not certain what that means, but the only way to do that would be lower the amount of trans users and contributors. Forcing out trans people is a bad thing, that's not identity politics, that's hatred

sorrybookbroke ,
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

Shit, sorry, you're a different guy I think? Apologies for that the top comment was deleted.

Still going to restate that removing trans people from the community wouldn't be identity politics, it'd be hatred

sorrybookbroke , (edited )
@sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works avatar

Through some further exploration I've also been able to find this which seems relevent:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion

Here's some points the source states:
In 2015, 15 years after a global cataclysm called the Second Impact, teenager Shinji Ikari is summoned to the futuristic city of Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendo Ikari, who is the director of the special paramilitary force Nerv. Shinji witnesses United Nations forces battling an Angel, one of a race of monstrous beings whose awakening was foretold in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Because of the Angels' near-impenetrable force-fields, Nerv's Evangelion bio-machines, which are synchronized to their pilots' nervous systems and possess their own force-fields, are the only weapons capable of fighting the Angels. Nerv officer Misato Katsuragi escorts Shinji into the Nerv complex beneath Tokyo-3, where Gendo pressures him into piloting Evangelion Unit-01 against the Angel. Without training, Shinji is quickly overwhelmed, causing the Evangelion to go berserk and savagely kill the Angel on its own.

Following hospitalization, Shinji moves in with Misato and settles into life in Tokyo-3. In his second battle, Shinji defeats an Angel but runs away afterward, distraught. Misato confronts Shinji, and he decides to remain a pilot. Shinji and Nerv's crew must defeat the remaining fourteen Angels to prevent the Third Impact, a global cataclysm that would destroy the world. Evangelion Unit-00 is repaired shortly afterward, and Shinji tries to befriend its pilot Rei Ayanami, a mysterious and socially isolated teenage girl. With Rei's help, Shinji defeats another Angel. They are joined by Evangelion Unit-02's pilot, the multitalented but insufferable teenager Asuka Langley Sōryu, who is German-Japanese-American. The three of them manage to defeat several Angels, and as Shinji adjusts to his new role as a pilot, he gradually becomes more confident and self-assured. Asuka moves in with Shinji, and they begin to develop confusing feelings for one another, kissing at her provocation.

After being absorbed by an Angel, Shinji breaks free thanks to Eva-01 acting on its own. He is later forced to fight Evangelion Unit-03, who has become infected, and its pilot, his friend and classmate Toji Suzuhara, becomes incapacitated and permanently disabled. Asuka loses her self-confidence following a defeat and spirals into depression, which is worsened by her next fight against an Angel who attacks her mind. It forces her to relive her worst fears and childhood trauma, resulting in a mental breakdown. In the next battle, Rei sacrifices herself to self-destruct Unit-00 and save Shinji. Misato and Shinji visit the hospital, where they find Rei alive, but claiming she is "the third Rei". Misato forces the scientist Ritsuko Akagi to reveal the dark secrets of Nerv, the Evangelion boneyard, and the Dummy Plug system, which operates using clones of Rei, who was created using the DNA of Shinji's mother, Yui Ikari. This succession of events leaves Shinji emotionally scarred and alienated from the rest of the characters. Kaworu Nagisa replaces the catatonic Asuka as Unit-02's pilot and befriends Shinji, gaining his trust. He is revealed to be the final foretold Angel, Tabris, and fights Shinji, realizing that he must die to allow humanity to survive. He asks Shinji to kill him, and he hesitates but eventually kills Kaworu; an event that causes him to be overridden with guilt.

After the final Angel is defeated, Gendo triggers the "Human Instrumentality Project", a forced evolution of humanity in which the souls of mankind are merged for benevolent purposes. He believes that if unified, humanity could overcome the loneliness and alienation that has eternally plagued them. Shinji's soul grapples with the reason for his existence and reaches an epiphany that he needs others to thrive and to accept himself by seeing a potential Shinji in another reality. This enables him to destroy the wall of negative emotions that torment him and unites with the others, who congratulate him.

Trust me my friend, a person can make a c program that's much, much slower than one in python. That's a meaningless point.

Sure, c allows for more control and thus the possibility for a quicker program but that's just it, a possibility.

Zipper, though written in c++, can only download one thing at a time. This is why it's so slow

If I had a 3d printer making negatives of the baddies a before casting them in chocolate, cake, or marshmallow would be wild.

On a budget like I am I’m certain I could do something with cookies to make some or carve a marshmellow down, slime out of jello, etc. I’ve done 3d trees, but could also make my mini peanut butter cookies and use icing to paint the monster to be a token.

Cheese would be a good medium as well however. Fuck man, I could do a three course dnd session. Charcuterie shiskabandits? Cheese pants, meat shirt, and a grape head all held with a toothpick?

This would be fantastic for a kid, or very kid like adults. Ant on a log direwolf? Strands of twisted liqurice as tentacles for a rope or an abolyth? More ideas are welcome

God dahm I kinda want to do that next time I run assault on gumdrop mountain. I don’t know if any of the PCs would actually eat during that specific campaign though lol

This led to mass starvation as the workers no longer could feed themselves and no industry replaced the lost work. The textiles produced were of lower quality too, and sold for less which harmed the local economy leading to a rise in food prices along with the lower wages. Since the vast majority of arable land was used for cotton too no local food could lower the prices. Many people died as the luddites predicted.

There was mass starvation

They were right. This is not “anti-automation” this is against lower wages, mass unemployment, and an economic decrease. The automation was the cause of this, yes, but the concept of automation was not the issue. The issue was it’s use here.

If the workers were provided an alternative job, if there was some plan to avoid starvation, and if the textiles were of a reasonable quality then there would be no issue.

History proved the luddites correct

Don’t know about gnomes default file manager, but dolphin has this ability. You’ll have to install the addons and enable it in the context menu however.

To repeat others opinion though, I haven’t actually needed this feature outside of very specific situations (that I create myself). Linux operates a bit different and shouldn’t need this for anything outside of some poorly made, or potentially malicious apps and scripts. I agree though it’s still nice to have the option

Discord and matric are room based chat services. You join a room and there’s a chat around some subject going on which you can participate in. I use it for my DND group to discuss upcoming games and our general lives. Some larger communities form on these apps. Say, game emulation, people who talk about a video game, college members and alumni, people in a city, weed in a country, youtubers, etc.

This seems to be a bridge that copies messages from discord and sends them to matrix, or copies messages from matrix and sends them to discord. Allowing users from one service to talk to the other. The intent is to slowly bring members of a larger discord community over to the matrix server.

Why do we need to separate somebodies core beliefs from the person?

That is the person. What they do and what they believe makes them who they are. I hate this “please just ignore this massive section of what makes up a person” trend. Sure though, you can still like this video separating creator from content, but if somebody does something terrible it’s ok to no longer like that person as shown here with “I love them” followed by “I now understand more about this person and no longer love them”

Authoritarianism is when you judge people by their actions and beliefs, today I learned.

I’m sorry, that’s incredibly funny. I love lemmy all the weirdos come out to say the wildest shit.

Sure, their core beliefs can change, as can my opinion of them when this happens.

To clarify. Authoritarianism is the belief that a singular authority should hold strong control over a system often meaning those who act against it or disagree should face punishment output by said system. I dislike people who agree with that idea, but if they change their opinion mine may too

Gpl licences don’t mean free as in no payments allowed, but free as in freedom. Many open source, even gpl, software is paid. All agpl, or gpl in general, means is that the code is free to copy as long as one abides by a set of pro-consumer rules while making your changes open too. It gives specific rights to the user or person who copies the project

This means you could build or host this product for free if you wanted, taking the code and setting it up yourself, but their distribution of the code or hosting of their project can include a paid tier or payment upfront. As long as they give all code for the project to people who use it they’re not in violation of the agpl

To do this one could install the new distro on a new partition, boot to it, delete everything from the old installation except the hone directory, move your user to the base directory (/home/sorrybookbroke -> /sorrybookbroke) before editing your /etc/fstab and mounting the old partition to /home

This way, no external drive is needed like @Luci suggested. Of course, their suggestion is the easiest, but this is the one I personally chose.

I wouldn’t suggest arch unless you know it’s issues. I love the distro, but I understand many might not.

It’s the quickest rolling release for most things. When you update, things sometimes break, and break bad. Like the grub issue we all had where you restarted to get a “grub rescue” screen with no way to boot. Like the linux 5.17(I think?) Kernel that had some intel laptops backlights go flash from max to zero, possibly destroying the machine.

You’ll also have some software or drivers with major bugs like the nvidia driver a while ago that stuck brightness at 100% (or 50, in my case) requiring a downgrade of both the kernal, and nvidia driver.

Arch is the first place where new software gets to meet a large userbase and their hardware. The first place it might interact with other new software.

Sometimes you need to manually intervene and change stuff, and this means keeping up with current arch events via their mailing list, lemmy, or reddit (reddit sadly is the safer bet)

If you’re ok with this I’d highly reccomend arch if not only for the AUR. If not, PopOS and Fedora are also pretty sick and, there’s also tumbleweed.

That’s a great question, I’ll admit I hadn’t thought about that until now. I’ll aim for a maximum of two hours for this one. Meaning 6:30-8:30.

This will be my first time doing something like this though so I’m unsure how long these things should last. We’ll see how it goes however, and what the time frame of those who come in is. The idea is for this to be more of a discussion than a normal stream so an exact schedule is impossible to determine before we start. I’ll be free the entire night though, but I’d like to keep the main event below two hours.
