I am excited to finally share our recent paper "Filtering After Shading With Stochastic Texture Filtering" (with @mattpharr @marcosalvi and Marcos Fajardo), published at ACM I3D'24 / PACM CGIT, where we won the best paper award! 1/N

@aras @BartWronski @demofox I'm also serious, come hang out in Portland with Wade & I and work for a bit on whatever out of our office. Alternatively, I'm still trying to get out to Poland at some point and take a motorcycle trip with Drobot up to your neck of the woods.

@BartWronski @aras @demofox It may be Sept or Oct, will let you know. Michal and I have also talked about doing a bike-packing trip across Scotland, we'll see what happens, and go bug @neil if we do…

    Thank you to the @i3d committee and @BartWronski for a wonderful I3D 2024, was great to attend and help in a small way. And Patrick Cozzi and Cesium for being such good hosts, including letting me take two hours of calls in their offices after the conference finished :).

    mtothevizzah ,
    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @BartWronski @sillyCoelophysis it’s still far better than preexisting single vendor lockin with cable. We have multiple levels of granularity available and while I always prefer fine grained a la carte it’s not realistic to maximize that for everyone given costs.

    It never fails to amaze me how much perf you can get back in C++ when people assume that the compiler will merge multiple accesses into a hashmap into a single lookup.

    @neilhenning @lritter "const should fix this”.

    mtothevizzah ,
    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @neilhenning @lritter Corollary pet peeve:

    funcA( foo.bar().wow );
    funcB( foo.bar().much );
    funcC( foo.bar().temps );

    FFS, just assign foo.bar() to a temp so I can inspect it in the debugger… also probably less typing ultimately! And maybe someone snuck an expensive op into bar() and at least you're only executing it once now! Grrr!

    Random thing I ran into in London was seeing this logo on a door and remembering always eating here when visiting SF for GDC. Turns out it’s a weirdly sprawling high end chain with owners including an Abu Dhabi investment firm, good times.

    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @c0de517e Yeah, the article about it shutting down mentions their Abu Dhabi firms, etc. It's all very weird.

    Rental car review - 2024 VW Jetta. Really liked this car. Bad rental tires of course, but within those limits the handling was excellent. Engine is the base spec turbo 1.5L, and struggled a bit on steep hills, but it was fast enough to not be a problem. Adaptive Cruise Control is a first for me - slightly annoying in places, but once you get used to it, a handy tool. Android Auto, comfortable ride, huge storage space, average 33mpg over 800 miles. Would absolutely rent again.

    @TomF we had a manual 1.8T wagon almost twenty years ago and it was fun to drive, good acceleration, nice gearbox, reliability was a mess though. Drivers window fell into door while driving it at speed in the 405 while raining, among other things. But that was a long time ago.

    Ugh. I don't need glasses to see my desktop monitor, or anything further away, but I do need a set of glasses for reading books or my phone.

    But I have discovered that trying to use a laptop, I either have to use it further away than I'd like so I have to use big text, or I have to wear my glasses and hunch over it to get my face closer. Both suck.

    So instead I have bought a second set of weaker glasses, specifically for using the laptop.

    Getting old is a pain in the arse.

    Setting up the website for the Render Engine Architecture Conference 2024 (https://www.enginearchitecture.org) is a surprising amount of work even with a simple website and turn-key web hosting. Dealing with email and mailing lists is like the worst thing in the world given all the anti-spam systems you need to setup: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, etc.

    Every once in a while I'll have a panic moment "why's the game running so slow" and forget I ran it in Debug.

    mtothevizzah ,
    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @solidangle My mission is to bring back 30Hz debug since we are retail at >= 60. Had a leg up on PS3 generation as most SPU modules had to always be compiled with opts for .text segment space reasons. Got lazy the last ten years.

    mtothevizzah ,
    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @solidangle Nice. My other pet peeve is slow debug 2D text renderers, and the games slowing down significantly with lots of debug views up. Debug code should be performant.

    PSA:
    So the thing about employee stock purchase plans is it's a way for a company to pay you, but have you put some money back into the company as if they didn't (And you get a discount to sweeten the deal)
    RSUs are similar - they are taxed like a cash bonus that you happened to buy company stock with.
    These things can be beneficial, but it's good to know the score!
    If you want the stock, cool. If not, sell both rsus and espp as you get them. Espp=Discounted money. Rsu=cash bonus.
    FYI!

    mtothevizzah ,
    @mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @demofox My financial advisor framed it as: “Are you buying your company's stock with your cash? No? Then why would you hold it?”
