Apple arm chips still have good days ahead of it. It’s been years since the MacBook m1 was released, how can competition not catch up already ?

le_saucisson_masquay ,

We call that bullshit where I come from. Either it’s historical or it’s fiction. Fiction can be done in an historical setting, but is never historical itself.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

There are differences between play store and other store. For instance, on fdroid you have a pop up asking each and every time if you want to install or update the app after pressing install button. Play store you just click install and let it do its work in the background.

I don’t think fdroid can update app by itself in the background. Play store can.

I mean third party store doesn’t have access to some of the api play store have, things you don’t care but that is important to normies and that would induce reduced profit from epic store.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

I used droid-ify recently, which is well maintained and still got these pop up. Are you sure we’re talking about the same thing ? I mean pop up that says « would you like to install x app ». Yes no. And you got to give permission to the store first to even show this pop up.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

doesn’t most vpn user want to get rid of tracking and spying ? It would makes no sense for them to use Google vpn.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Yeah you’re right, Forgot about this use case.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Linux on phone is great for privacy but can you say that on security ?? It’s open source, not very popular. We’ve seen how it can go wrong recently.

Id put it in third after grapheneos. But the end result is that it’s not suitable anyway.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

We know what snowden does, and this guy is targeted by the usa. Basically never use phone, only computer on ethernet running qubesos from external drive on computer bought with cash.

It’s not a secret by now.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Oh my god you’re so right. Thanks for enlightening us.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Your dumbass should check XZ Backdoor.

It was open source, yet only blind luck led a Microsoft developer to uncover it. It would have gone in most Linux installation otherwise.

All because of an unpopular package that was maintained by a very few people.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Exception to the rule ?? I’d argue you have no idea how many times it succeeded because that’s the point. We only know what failed, if this worked I have no doubt that companies running Pegasus which have hundreds of millions of dollar of budget every year can success.

Open source when not maintained properly is fundamentally flawed, there just need one weak element in the chain, one package maintained by a handful of people on their own time.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Holy fuck, every time: one line answer, no explanation, just Insults. Find someone to fck instead of crying on the internet.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

An open not maintained system is worst than a well maintained but closed one. There are billions of $ behind window and macos. Some critical package on Linux are maintained by 2 guys during their spare time…

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets ( arstechnica.com )

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don’t do this not because they can’t but because they don’t want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Well Say whatever about apple but my grandma is running an iPhone 5 for years, replaced the battery from a third party repair shop last year and it keep working absolutely perfectly. There was absolutely no issue finding someone to replace it and it costs 40€.

But yeah, if we had bought her a shity android third grade phone, support would be long gone and the thing barely working. Would have bought one or two other phone in the meantime.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

It’s not so much that I’m praising apple but that I’m criticizing android manufacturers. You can make it as much repairable as you want, if you stop updating after 2 year it’s as good as dead.

I know we could have bought her a pixel, but they got their own issue. And not so much repairable.

Samsung back in these time, it was 2 year update too and Im not sure even today they keep updating their low end phone for much longer than that. Wouldn’t buy a s23 for a grandma that only makes call and some internet search. 😀

le_saucisson_masquay ,

There is no denial a.i. is going to replace or significantly reduce some jobs. But I predict it’s going to happen mostly in bullshit job like marketing, advertisement, the kind of journalism that repeat the same news from other reputed newspaper.

A.i. isn’t going to replace the migrants that lay bricks in front on me, it’s not going to replace their chief.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Is Mozilla going to set qwant as default search engine ? Or at least stop setting Google as default ?

If no, then this is just PR crap no one should care about. Not that many people care about Firefox anyway (2% market share nowadays).

le_saucisson_masquay ,

When commenting on Reddit I always make sure to write garbage i would say in a bar, not something actually useful to anyone.

If there is somewhere a LLM trained on this data, good luck 🫡

Meanwhile on Lemmy, it’s only high tier philosophical thought.

Do the same, fuck Reddit. 🤣

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Castaneda also noted that the company (Google) will now pay “zero” dollars as part of the settlement after earlier facing a $5 billion penalty.

I can that a win (for Google).

le_saucisson_masquay ,

i see the downvote but you got to admit companies tend to follow whatever apple decides to do. Remember how we used to have headphone jack before apple removed it ? remember the numerous android phone with a big notch (pixel was the winner here) after iphone switched to faceid ? Remember the focus on privacy from google after apple made it’s pop up about not being tracked between apps ? I probably forgot others, but whatever succesfull (or not) apple does, other companies follow. always has been.

M1 arm macbook have been a quite a hit for apple, very successfull. Guess what, it probably pushed competition to make their own, but they couldn’t because who the hell can make their own processor and then force almost the entire developper on their operating system to write software for it ? Even if we get arm windows laptop, good luck getting most of your software to run on arm. You’d be lucky to even get big ones like photoshop. everything will be run through translation layer, will sucks performance and battery.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Europe already did. That’s just usa kind of catching up, if it ever success.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

trust takes years to build but it can evaporate in seconds. mozilla associating with these people is very bad rep, won’t help them develop further.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

What you mean? I’m saying Mozilla associating with them is bad rep, whatever if they backpack a month later.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Yeah, I’m myself a Firefox user but it doesn’t mean i can’t criticize when Mozilla does something wrong. In business you’re responsible to who you associate with, that’s business 101. i fail to understand why people in here disagree but to be honest I’m not sure it’s the business elite hanging around here considering the amount of comment I see promoting communism/ socialism and how bad capitalism is 😭

le_saucisson_masquay ,

i switched to android a few month ago, still can’t find a good enough pdf viewer, modern ebook reader, reminder app that is modern and syncs with whatever service i want (not only google). i mean stuffs that is preinstalled on every iphone and available for free. and people wonder why others buy iphone ?

People buy iphone despite being it so locked down, expensive, hard to repair, having a thunderbolt port. because the alternative is even worst.

but you can get an Android phone with similar specs for the same or less of a cost.

i did the mistake of buying chinese xiaomi 12 phone, 100$ less than iphone mini but god this sucks ass. It’s awesome for the kid playing video game because of its processor watercooled whatever the fck but people who need simple phone to do work quick ? fck that.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

the fact you got 11 upvote and 6 downvote is interesting to say the least. where are all the android naysayer people at ? 😂 time to downvote.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Difference between macos and gnome is that apple has invested lot of money and extremely talented people, whereas gnome has much less people. I don’t mind not having customisation when everything is good enough, but not the case in gnome at all.

Like the thing in finder where you type letter and instead of showing file starting with the letter it starts a recursive search. Or the giant top bar that has a barbone menu and serves almost no purpose. Apple put the app menu in there, makes sense.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

i mean we can poke at gnome, kde and every other linux desktop environment as much as we want. none is very good, they all have issue. that’s why people who care pay big money for mac and then are called sheep by those who don’t.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Im not sure it’s completely true, it feels like throwing the baby with the bath water. Yes you get rid of YouTube, Reddit and other social media infested in ai generated content but there is value on those website. I looked at YouTube yesterday on how to do placoplâtre, just today I read interesting article on sh.itjust.works and sometime ago had interesting conversation here, and so on. If tomorrow I’m viewing computer generated article, talking with bots and viewing bot generated video i might as well quit internet completely and live like in the 90’s. It would be a setback, not improvement.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

it’s saying people will stop using free social media like twitter, facebook, youtube, etc… because of spammy bot generated content. Less people, less reason for youtuber to upload helpfull video or people providing educative content on other platform.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Until it’s you who get wrongfully put in jail, but I get the point. I think everyone agree it’s better now and also they should do everything they can to speed up the release of innocent people.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Isn’t that market manipulation and anyway completely illegal to force buy back stock at 0$ ?? If I force you to sell me your house for 0$, whatever if it’s in a contract, that would be illegal in Europe. 1€ would be fine tho.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Just as we stopped beating our chest with fist when angry, humans can understand pattern and forcefully prevent them.

Firefox saw an increase in users (~50% in Germany and ~30% in France) following Apple’s default browser changes in the EU, as did Brave. ( www.theverge.com )

Firefox spokesperson Christopher Hilton tells The Verge that the browser has seen a more than 50 percent jump in users in Germany and a nearly 30 percent increase in France....

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Yes, and I’ll add that 30% is nothing is still nothing. Firefox and brave share on iOS are very small. This is great for customer choice but until there is real chromium and blink browser available there won’t be any real intensive to switch. Firefox already said they are not that interested, now it’s up to Google and then we can maybe have brave and other chromium clone.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

So where are the people saying edge couldn’t be uninstalled because it’s a core part of the system that other element depended upon. I swear I have seen this answer on every reddit post about uninstalling edge, yet Microsoft show its absolutely possible (although only in Europe, because dependencies don’t work the same in Europe 😂).

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Edge is bloated as fuck, just opening it for the first time prompts you with a 3 step dialog you can’t close about how Microsoft value your privacy and which setting you should choose.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

What you mean? No one is asking for removal of default browser, i say it should be possible to uninstall it. That’s different.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Ever read 1984 ? War is peace, etc. I didn’t mean to say Microsoft care about privacy, I meant they pretend.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Disagree, I run a MacBook m1 and enjoy it mostly because everything is compiled for arm. The very few software running through Rosetta are slow to launch, drain battery and less performant. If you were to run x64 on arm it just kill the interest of arm: battery becomes just as bad as on x64, performance is worst.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

I didnt use to run macOS before that but I’m surprised it could be worst, when using app through Rosetta it takes at least 2 or 3 seconds to launch and there is 20-30% more cpu usage. Although Its on my very limited pool of app (2) but even then you would be crazy to run macOS before, it would be more expensive than windows laptop for way less performance.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

When contacted about those allegations by the BBC, TikTok provided the statement: “With regards to users being locked out of the app until they called, that is false. All users had two methods for dismissing the notifications.”

Probably the usual hidden grey button “dismiss” over greyish background, just as Google, Microsoft and some other do.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

NSA can’t harvest user data from tiktok because it’s Chinese based, so they force them to split and sell to American subcompany that is obliged by law to give them access to their server. Everything else is political bullshit, like the Chinese gouvernement can “weaponize it’s app” ?? They can’t turn teenager into terrorist hating their country just like that, tiktok can only influence so much.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Cmon that’s not that difficult to understand: The same reason usa bans Chinese app. China, just as usa, has mass surveillance system and want to get every single data, they can’t do that with apps owned by usa based companies.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Yeah, do nothing because you wouldn’t take the risk it works.

le_saucisson_masquay ,

Who’s going to read the verge article if we all ditch our phones ?
