Hey folks, I just got Bazzite OS KDE up and running on my PC. Being a Linux newbie, I'd love some tips, tricks, and app suggestions if you have any. 😅 Switching from Windows has been a bit of a maze with all the distros out there, so any pointers would be awesome!...
Initially, I heard about Bazzite OS here on Lemmy; I was tempted to try it out. As someone who loves FOSS, I always wanted to move to Linux. However, I do gaming occasionally, holding me back until I discovered Bazzite OS.
Work: I need to learn Linux to be a penetration tester.
Customisation: I Love customisation, only Windows (I still have it installed on my other drive; it’s fully customised with zero bloatware). Currently following this tutorial to customise my OS. However, I can’t find anything similar to Latte-Dock. I have tried Plank and Cairo Dock. They’re buggy.
Apps: I’m looking for alternatives to ShareX, Fan controller, Flow launcher any other helpful tool similar to them. I have been exploring for the last 2/3 days, but I couldn’t find any app that comes even closer to ShareX (I mainly use video recording, OCR, Image capture and GIF maker features), I’m currently trying FlameShot.
Thank you (: Mental Outlaw is one of my favourite YouTubers. He’s the reason I learned about FOSS, Digital privacy. Then, I discovered useful websites such as Privacy Guides.
I feel like third-party docks are not correctly implemented. A plasma panel is what you should be using. Thanks (: That was my first-ever try, by the way. I can’t make the background transparent despite selecting the transparent option.
Educate yourself. The kids your united terrorist state of Israel is killing are becoming Hamas. Hamas didn’t fall from the sky to kill Jews. Palestinians are Muslim, Christians and Jews. But you don’t care about Palestinian Jews because they’re not white; they’re Arab.
Even though this question has probably been asked countless times in other communities, I still want to know: what tool do you think comes closest to ShareX? I'm particularly interested in features like image capture, video recording, GIF creation, and OCR reading all in one tool for Linux.
I'm dual booting Pop_OS and Windows 11 for now while l try things out. I went with Pop_OS for the NVIDIA drivers, since I have a NVIDIA card. Installation went smoothly, but setup is where things started to get a little weird....
I had a terrible experience with popOS, manjaro and Garuda. But it was back in 2020. Some of the issues you’ve mentioned and + a few more. I couldn’t use them as my daily driver. I’m using Nvidia. GPU had too many issues and lags. (I’m gonna dual boot to see how it goes).
After watching Chris Titus’s Linux tier video, I’m interested in trying:
Kubuntu
Nobara (sceptical about it)
mint
I like the look of Fedora Plasma KDE (I wonder if you could get that look on the ones I have mentioned)
Thanks for the update. When it comes to dual monitors, I’m in the same spot. Reading through the comment section, I found that Bazzite OS is what might suit me. As for the environment, I was going for KDE; however, after reading your update, I’m sceptical about it.
So yesterday, I tried Bazzite os, and it’s pretty good. Works perfectly with Nvidia GPU. You have to use x11 instead of Wayland. So far, I’ve tested BF1 and Hell Diver 2. Experience is excellent, with no lag whatsoever. It’s the first time I’m giving Linux a proper shot. However, I will need some advice on optimising it. For example, fan control or any other tips/tricks I can get.
(I had app flickering issues, and changing to x11 fixed it)
Dual monitors are working perfectly with 165Ghz refresh rate.

I know Firefox has a Split View feature; however, it’s not as convenient as Vivaldi or the Arc browser. I love how The browser company implemented the Split View screen. Firefox Split View is pretty limited, and I’m unsure if it has improved since its release....
That makes sense. I’m using Floorp, which already has many CSS tweaks built-in; however, it is pretty limited, as you saw in the gif. With Arc, you can have as many Split/side Views. It’s one of their main selling features.
I’m looking for a watch that is able to do basic “smart” things like show notifications and ping my phone if I misplace it. A timer/stopwatch would also be good, and a long lasting battery....

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?
