It's pretty easy to discern refresh rate with the human eye if one tries. Just move your cursor back and forth really quickly. The number of ghost cursors in the trail it leaves behind (which btw only exist in perception by the human eye) is inversely proportional to the refresh rate.
He's not an economist, so I'd be healthily skeptical of this exact economic solution. You should however be very concerned about his opinions on where AI is going that it may necessitate this.
It's kind of curious that the headline here is "UBI" given that he mentions AI poses an extinction-level risk.
I hate decibels. Such needless confusion over whether they're an absolute or relative scale, what the reference volume is, what the underlying SI units are. Are these all measured at a uniform distance? Why would you take a shower at the library?
A rock concert emanating from a point will sound considerably louder at 5 feet vs 30 feet and will make just as much of a difference as 50 feet vs 300.
Of course, accoustics in a concert hall are designed to minimize this difference. Doesn't explain jet fighters though.
Maxwell's demon knowing in advance the exact state of the system isn't really practical as a solution. Sure you can concoct such a situation, but that isn't useful.
I guess I would have called them "bad scientists" -- scientists who are bad at their job and hold everyone back. But still scientists.
For instance they correctly applied the scientific method in most other cases. They just were blind to or intentionally obstructive to certain things.
I try my best to be rational and apply Bayes' theorem now and then, but I am sure I am still missing some invisible monsters which will make me look arrogant or foolish in the future. I don't experiment much with software I am unfamiliar with, even if it could improve things at work. I do now and then of course, but should I allocate more time to trying new things? Yeah probably, but I don't, and my job still gets done.
I legitimately don't understand how a man can be blind to this kind of treatment of women. Don't you just need to look at any treatment of women online for more than a nanosecond and you'll see this?
That makes sense. Perhaps sweeping generalisations should be avoided out of concern such a response could be triggered. FWIW, there are loads of sweeping generalisations about women too. Even the ones that look innocuous bother me.
I can understand why all the other things would be listed here, and I would understand if sexuality in general was considered inappropriate for children, but why homosexuality in particular? This is strange to me....
All of these represent various social mores. I'd have no problem with my kids seeing content involving fantasy violence, but I respect that others might object. As a bisexual myself, I have less respect for those who object to their kids seeing homosexuality specifically, but I can tolerate their existence.
For fairness' sake, I wouldn't mind it if heterosexuality were on the list too.
Yes that was clear to me. I was saying that, while I don't find same-sex content objectionable (indeed it makes me happy to see this kind of representation on screen), and I personally think it's something children should be exposed to, many people would disagree. Just like other tags on here which I think children shouldn't be exposed to at a young age but others wouldn't mind. Relative morality.
Politically speaking, I would be happier if those who oppose same-sex relationships were to change their minds. They pose a threat to my life. But FOSS is for everyone, even people I disagree with.
I laugh because this is funny but then I think, oh god what if she's serious and now there's going to be a twitter campaign to remove satanic language in tech.
"No true scotsman..." I get it. So you define white/black in your mind based on someone's culture and politics. Kind of contentious to say the least. Pretty convenient for you that you get to call everyone you disagree with "cracker" though.
It would be arguing semantics to say "half-white" is problematic when by the usual definition half-POC is still POC. So I'll refrain.
Now that you've explained your unusually flexible view on race in the neighbouring thread, I think what you're saying is that "colonialist yahoos will continue to exist widespread even after the fall," and here we agree.
I expect you'll continue to find that people bicker with you when you go outside of your bubble because you refer to commonly understood concepts in abrasively inscrutable ways.
It's not immediately obvious to me that indie developers in Vietnam won't be able to find an international publisher. While I don't approve of the law, it does strike me as potentially having a positive effect on Vietnamese studios.
Statistical error. Unlikely to encounter a bear; but per bear encounter, less likely to survive than per men encounter.
Serial killers and rapists are very clever and because there exist serial killers who want to kill indigenous women in the woods, they will likely succeed. Bears have no such desire, and because indigenous women are clever they will avoid the bears.
But I'm willing to bet that the odds of a random man being a rapist/murderer are much lower than a random bear deciding to kill me.
It's hard thing to think about because our brains want to rephrase the situation into taking account how likely it is to encounter men vs bears in the first place. That's why this isn't very applicable to, say, staying safe at night or in bars.
...except it is. This is why, if you have to take a ride home with a strange man, it's much safer to go with an arbitrary man of your choosing than the one who offers.
