Fun bug: my wife and I were playing Wheel of Fortune on the switch. We each created female characters, but the game crashed while spinning the wheel. Fortunately it saves your mid-game progress, except when we resumed playing, my wife's character was now a man.

She got transed by a crash!

I saw this voltmeter at the electronics flea market. Look at that massive probe! It looks like you need to check your back blast before using it.
Apparently it's for REALLY high voltages? Like, 3kV?

Can't believe they spent a gigawatt training GPT3 and the fucker isn't even trying to overthrow humanity.

Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

If you spend that much time and effort building an AI it should be less than an hour before something is on fire, several people are dead, and someone is talking about how it was wrong to tamper in God's domain.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I know it seems ridiculous but I think the main problem with the AI industry is insufficient hubris.

@molly0xfff annoyingly I've written about this before. It's solely because of people who have copies of the blockchain stored on offline/unplugged computers that wouldn't get fried.

But let it be known that if society falls, me and my gang of roving bdsm-core warriors will be finding and smashing every one of those computers.

one of my least favorite things in computing are progress bars that straight up lie to you until getting to the very end

just make it a puck that goes back and forth and grows bigger as you actually receive data or something

stop fucking lying to me you piece of shit

foone ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@whitequark I made one of these when I worked for the US government. The progress bar was just faked, the api we had only had a "is it done?" call.
So I programmed it to consistently go up and stall at 95% until it finished.

I'm sorry

the world needs more recreational programming.
like, was this the most optimal or elegant way to code this?

no, but it was the most fun to write.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

cause like, yeah, it's good to know how to write optimal code and how to make it elegant and easy to maintain, sure!

but one thing you have to maintain is your brain. If you're constantly driving your programming brain at maximum speed, maximum awareness of all possible caveats and vulnerabilities, always considering "how will I maintain this code in ten years time?" you're going to burn yourself out.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

You're associating programming with a high-stress high-attention activity. That's going to make programming something that's categorized in your brain as no fun, never relaxing, never something you do just cause it would be interesting... you're going to start dreading it, even just a little. "oh well, let's get this over with."

That's not a good way to think about it in the long run.

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

we often say that programming is more an art than a science, but we need to treat it like one too.

Sometimes you need to paint a sunset not because someone paid you to paint a sunset, but because it'd be fun to paint a sunset.

Bad idea: an external floppy drive that can appear as a mass storage device of arbitrary size. The way it works is it has a little screen, and you use that to configure how big you want it to be, then it formats the proper number of 3.5" floppy disks.
Then when the PC tries to read a sector that's not on the current disk, the display will just prompt you to insert disk or whatever.

I'm still broke, though I've got a temp job for now: they've not yet paid me, however, and I've had to pay something like 4k$ for two medications, and another 2k$ that was supposedly going to make the 4k$ free.

So any donations would be great. https://ko-fi.com/fooneturing

youtubers stop using the term "asset flip" for reusing an enemy sprite or model recolored for a different enemy challenge

words have meaning and that is not even remotely close to what that term means

foone ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@eniko I should do an "asset flip game jam"
The only rule is that you have to use pre-existing assets and you can't modify them except for like, in-engine scaling/palette swaps.

New generator time! I got distracted and finally added Winners Don't Use Drugs.

This screen was never a font-based thing that I know of, so I made a font out of the letters we have, drew the rest, and made it kinda fonty.
