DaddyGotCoffee has a look at the new Option-O Lagom Casa, and is very impressed with it.

We've opted to wait until August to get a test unit, with the 65mm burrs (which aren't ready yet). Still, look pretty great with the 40mm burrs.

Way too young. 😔 If you're a Canadian and a fan of sports, you know Darren Dutchyshen, or Dutchy. A long standing member of TSN, Canada's equivalent of ESPN, Dutchy covered hockey, football and even soccer at times.

RIP, Dutchy, at 57 years young.

the next race is probably going to be even more boring and predictable. It's at Monaco, a track that just doesn't suit the massive, bloated sizes that F1 cars have become in the past 15 years. No passing, no battles, not much of anything, unless it rains. Not even sure I'll watch it. Prediction: Max will win by 15 seconds. ;)

coffeegeek , to random
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

Possibly the most boring race of the season so far, for fans watching. No action, no real battles, Max having a 5 second lead most of the race.

I honestly believe Max lifted a bit in the last 10 laps just to make it 'interesting' for Lando to catch up. the win was never, ever in doubt.

I watched the 2 hour race in about 25 minutes, fast forwarding thru most of my recording of it on PVR.

Yawn.

I wonder if everyone out there knows just how small the Kalita Wave 155 glass brewer is.

I thought it was much bigger before buying one a few years ago.

Look at it side by side with the small Origami Flower brewer, intended for the same filter. Or the V60 No.2 brewer. It's tiny! And surely a pretty big difference in brew profile. (IMO, the Origami gives the better extraction: less bypass).

cc @coffee

Origami Flower left, Kalita Wave right, both with 155 filter inside
Origami Flower and Kalita Wave brewers side by side.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@bentsai I prefer using the Kalita Wave 155 filters in it, because they adhere better to the side walls (in each nook, as it were), and have less bypass than using a V60 paper filter.

Not a huge user of the brewer, so I do a standard 21g in, 325g out, pour 40g for saturate / pause, pour in 100g batches slowly for the brew.

coffeegeek ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@chetwisniewski Wow congrats! I think you're really going to enjoy that machine.

Start with Lance's video, he walks thru a lot of the advanced stuff. Just ignore that he's already modded the machine by adding the bluetooth pressure buib to the front.

Re our First Look for the Bianca V3, which will have all the main deets on the machine, is still a ways off. I haven't even cobbled together the roughly 25 pages of hand written notes yet into some edited prose.

Coffee nerds of Mastodon: I'm looking for a cheap(ish) electric coffee grinder. Any recommendations?

I don't drink loads as too much caffeine isn't great for me, so use a small hand grinder currently. Ideally something small with a timer or setting for coarseness would be great and a half decent design / quality. So many different products with different price points and mixed reviews!?

Finishing up the studio photography of the white Bambino Plus. This may be my favourite photo. That logo is crazy hard to "resolve" in most light.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@tedmaul It does mate. I've seen maybe 2/3 of their colour units in person, and right now my two faves of this sea salt white, and the gunmetal grey models. I thought I'd love the red one, but in person it doesn't look as good as Breville's promo photos.

coffeegeek , to espresso group
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

I mean, if you're going to take the whole "the grinder is the most important part of the equation" thing seriously, why not prove it. ;)

Rancilio Stile grinder paired up with a Breville Bambino Plus. The PF almost sort of works in the Stile's PF holder. 7.1sec gives 17.5g dose.

cc @espresso

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso I am no fan of single dosing. I like accurate grinders with zero retention that can grind on demand. This is why my main home espresso grinder is a Baratza Sette 270wi. On demand. Zero retention. Accurate to .1g doses.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso For our home machine, only 2-3 doubles a day.

In our lab, as much as 50 or more doubles pulled on some days.

I have on demand grinders in both spaces. I still prefer them over single dosing. The hoppers hold about 3 days' worth of coffee, or enough for about 12 double shots.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso

Honestly tho, if you own a Sette 270Wi for espresso (I bought mine for the home setup), you'll wonder why anyone single doses ;) It's got an Acaia scale, built right in! :) And IMO, it's still one of the top conical burr grinders for espresso on the market today, in terms of output.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@iris IMO overkill. Any coffee outside of a one way valve bag should be kept for a max of 3-4 days in a bean hopper. If you're keeping the same coffee in there longer, you're doing it wrong.

That said, Mazzer and Mahlkonig both have done studies to show smoked or diffused hopper colours "preserve" roasted coffee better than clear plastic. Which is why they use smoked plastic.

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

UV rays can alter roasted coffee's chemistry, at least according to 2nd hand info I got from a few grinder makers.

MHW-3Bomber is getting a lot more serious this year (I still think they need a rebranding though, to match the more serious products).

They are sending us their new Blade manual grinder to test and review. What makes this grinder unique is it has a built in sieve system, for sieving out fines from your pour over and press pot grinds. That is innovative. I am looking forward to testing it!

The Sea Salt white Bambino Plus is absolutely gorgeous.

We are FINALLY going to try and get out our Full Review of this machine. Breville sent us a new one, with the new MilQ branding and red ring and a few minor tweaks to the machine. (for instance,, it comes with the same upgraded heavier plastic / metal tamper the Barista Express does).

@bedirthan do you mean the barista touch or barista touch impress? Did you get either?

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@bedirthan It's a good choice! It has all that the Bambino Plus has, plus some nice automations, and all you need to do is dose, tamp and move the PF from one area to the next. Congrats!

I'm re-reading my First Look for the La Marzocco Linea, written in 2015, and I'm kind of shocked at this answer I got from LM Home's two employees. When I asked them why they didn't have a true paddle wheel shot control on the Linea Mini, giving control over preinfusion and pressure... this is what they said:

"La Marzocco explained this to me in detail — most baristas don’t know or realise about preinfusion control, ramping up, and other nice cool super advanced things you can get from La Marzocco’s advanced paddle technology"

So they thought home baristas were too ignorant of pressure profiling and control, or even using preinfusion controls.

Wow. They were 1000% wrong on that.

Getting ready for a budget battle this weekend with an invited focus group.

  • Flair Neo Flex 2024 version ($100)
  • Gaggia Espresso Evolution ($250)

Who will win the hearts and minds of local coffee geeks!

I do want to say the Neo Flex and the Flair 58 are worlds apart in use, build condition and such. The Neo Flex has a ton of "flex" in all the plastic, feels a bit like a toy that can produce real espresso. But it's $100.

The Flair 58 feels like a professional tool, one that can bang out shot after shot with good precision. Something to keep in mind.

Coffee -- brewed coffee -- is extremely perishable. Delicate. Nuanced. All these things are destroyed by age.

Coffee cannot be canned.

coffeegeek , to random
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

Coffee cannot be canned.

I know lots of roasters / cafes / brands are doing exactly that, but they are killing the taste of coffee. So they add shit in to make it taste better. Because canned coffee tastes bad on its own.

We are still updating older content on CoffeeGeek; for instance, our 2015 First Look at the La Marzocco Linea Mini just got its refresh.

This "review" is notable because it is what ended our relationship with La Marzocco. They didn't like me calling out the deficiencies of the machine, and especially did not like me calling the paddle actuator a "faux paddle" group. ;)

coffeegeek OP ,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@fuzztech I still think they make exceptional coffee gear. But I think they need to rethink their marketing, and rethink how they develop and introduce their products.

They recently "lost" their biggest fanboy online, Real Sprometheus. He was probably responsible for selling dozens, if not hundreds of GS3s. But they either didn't treat him right, or had issues with the few negatives in his reviews (there were really very few negatives he pointed out), I don't know the reasons why, but it shows a distinct lack of appreciation on LM's part to lose that guy.

Here's why I like Turin Grinders and the Espresso Outlet company behind them:

Sure, they are selling white label China made grinders, but they are doing 100% of their service and support for these in the USA. And often getting them to you at cheaper prices than you'd pay for the same grinder via Ali Express.

Not to mention if you bought the white label grinder on Ali, good luck with after sales service. Non-existent.

Turin just launched a white label hand grinder. Looks interesting for $70.
