Hello, I'm Carl. I'm French-German and I currently live in Berlin. In my free time, I contribute to the KDE project where I (co-)maintain multiple applications: Tokodon, Merkuro, Arianna, NeoChat as well as the websites. Previously Nextcloud. Aside from coding, I like cycling, backing and playing board games.

A new feature I absolutely love in @neochat is that the message delegates now offer a full previews of the file you send. Here is for example a markdown file with Markdown syntax highlighting! The same works with train tickets or any other types of tickets that KDE Itinerary can consume.

Kai wrote a wonderful retrospective of the early Plasma 5 days. It's great to see from where we come from and how much progress we did over the years!

There's some mismatch between Linux kernel 3.10 and that wants to use clone3 to create a process thread.

Do I know anyone from @kde @kde who is able to assist with debugging it further?

The system call clone3 has been added to linux 5.3 but it seems that KDE does not do any fallback in case the system call is rejected with EPERM.

carlschwan ,
@carlschwan@floss.social avatar

@zygoon @kde @kde kernel 3.10 was released more than 10 years ago and received a last update in 2017. Is that really a kernel still used in the wild?

Looking at https://lxr.kde.org/search?%21v=kf5-qt5&_filestring=&_string=sched.h, KDE does not do a clone3 directly. It's likely done by a dependency of Plasma :( But I might be wrong as I'm definitively not an expert in syscall

@troyunrau @leopold We now create .exe and .appx for each app using Craft. The ultimate goal is to automatically submit the job artifact when releasing to the microsoft store https://blogs.kde.org/2023/12/20/gitlab-microsoft-store

We also do the same for some app for submitting to our own F-Droid repo on Android.

carlschwan ,
@carlschwan@floss.social avatar

@parens @troyunrau Exactly, it took me 5 years from my first contribution to finally getting hired full time to work on some KDE and KDE related open source code. And I'm very prolific in term of contributions (https://invent.kde.org/carlschwan).

It's quite an issue to get money, the current budget KDE e.V. has is around 200 000€ a year and that pays for a few part time employees. I'm lucky that I found a company interested in developing a commercial open source project based on KDE (gnupg/g10 code).

I create a new KDE style called Brise.

This style contains some tweaks to the default Breeze style like larger and configurable border radius, a new tab style, and more.

@kde

carlschwan OP ,
@carlschwan@floss.social avatar

@cameronbosch @kde Some of this changes are likely to be included in Plasma 6.1 in Breeze, but some will probably stay in this fork for now.
