This time the software giant is trying out having PC Manager suggest that you 'repair' your system by reverting to Microsoft's default search engine, Bing.

These are sound like things that are just begging European union to milk out some cash from Microsoft through fines.

Sad but honestly not surprising.

There's so much polarization going on left and right so its only matter of time before something like this happens.
Add in year after year of austerity measures and Income inequality and some people become desperate and very vulnerable to extreme views.

If its a single player focused with no (or very minimal) live service bullshit then great.
If not then well there's bunch of indie or classic boomer shooters I've not yet tried that are just that.

This is only to be expected after politicians have applied new austerity measures year after year.
Peacefull protests seem to have no effect on goverments and a lot of people are just looking for someone/something to blame for all the problems in the world.

The party that has come off the worst is the Greens, the junior partner in Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition. Its members reported 1,219 incidents last year, up sevenfold from 2019.

Honestly it's only matter of time before we start seeing more extremism when it comes to protecting climate. The current peaceful protests, chaining oneself to a tree, blockking traffic or vandalizing art galleries are cute in comparsion to stuff attributed to earth liberation front.

Seven out of 10 Europeans believe their country takes in too many immigrants ( english.elpais.com )

Europeans view immigration with increasing suspicion. Seven out of 10 Europeans believe that their country takes in too many migrants, according to a survey carried out by BVA Xsight for ARTE Europe Weekly, a project led by the French-German TV channel ARTE GEIE and which EL PAÍS has participated in, as part of the countdown to...

There are more things to a stable and sustainable society than economy.

With many European countries doing budget cuts to education, social security, healthcare etc many people are dissatisfied with their goverments. This can make it very hard to justify spending said budget on migrants or programs with aim to integrating migrants to the society.

Vipsu ,
@Vipsu@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but in order to solve that through migration we would need good infrastructure and effective processes to properly integrate these people to our societies. Unfortunately most of these countries do not have the money, expertise nor the will to implement these things properly making them fail not only their people but the refugees / migrants as well.

These migrants also increase the need for more social security and better education as many of them struggle to find jobs due to lack of education, language skills or just general distrust/racism towards migrants. Add in the additional need for healthcare and day care services well further putting presure on social systems in verge of collapse.

Now add in the possibility that artificial integeligence will cause causing unprecedented levels of unemployment in near future and how climate change may throw a wrench in the system at any point. I just don't see how we can solve any of these problems under the current market economy.

Honestly all these tech layoffs could really come bite back publishers and the big tech in the near future.
Theres a lot new talent for competitors to snatch and fraction of these developers might even form up new studios to make the next big thing.

Personally I feel that games are just one form of entertainment among many, it’s not all that uncommon for people to have points in their life where binging tv-series or reading books can feel more novel and interesting. It’s also possible that one finds a new hobby or interest that develops in to a obsession taking most of the free time with it.

Sure as an adult you’ll have more responsibilities and less free time to play but I feel that at least for millenials and zoomers gaming in some form or another will persist throught our lives. For some it may be few hours a day, for others it may be few hours a month but it’ll still feel good to pick up that new/old title and have some fun.

VSCode is also fairly popular among Java developers.
There’s also Eclipse Theia Blueprint which is basically a open source clone of VSCode.

It’s sort of minimalistic / lightweight alternative for IntellJ. Red Hat is working on the extension(s) which have worked fine for me at least for the past few years and it gets updates regularly.

I use VSCode for C++, C#, Java, Python and for things like docker-files, html etc. IntelJ is fine but a bit bloated in comparison with its menus, sub-menus, sub-sub-menus and built in unnecessary extra features for those just looking for code editor.

VSCode workflow with Java is mainly using it to write code, run tests, configure maven/gradle/docker/etc rest is more or less using CLI and Command palette.

This sounds very amateurish from Plasmas part as allowing themes to run bash scripts sounds like a very bad idea no matter how you look at it.

Themes should probably have something like their own domain specific language (DSL) that can be fed to the “theme engine”(?) which will make the requested changes. If additional functionality is needed it should be provided through separate modules/plugins or something.

Hopefully EU and US regulators will stomp that site to the ground as selling user generated data for AI companies sounds like something most people on Reddit did not sign in to.

Being able to contribute to a community can feel very rewarding even when you get little to no compensation for it. Many open source contributors know it all too well that their contributions can and will be used by big tech to make even more money.

While Meta might have ulterior motives for fediverse integration this might also be just one way to comply with Europes new DMA regulation.

Did Nokia even have official digital markpetplace for their phones? I only remember silly 3rd party stores selling ringtones and backgrounds through text messages. Maybe when smartphones became a thing and when iOS and Android phones were already dominating the industry. If I recall correctly some Nokia phones even supported sideloading with data cable.

Their phones where also generally fairly durable with replacable batteries and chargers (3rd party options being available for both) and from what I gather fairly easy to open and repair.

Honestly would love to use signal to chat with my whatsapp contacts. Signal could just throw in privacy notice when messaging with someone whatsapp or facebook messenger.

Currently I have signal installed and used to use it to message with my so but we have both moved to discord and use whatsapp to communicate with those that do not use discord. Still holding on to signal if and when some oddball from my contacts decides to use it instead.

I am aware of that but when all our friends or communities either use whatsapp or discord then it’s just more convenient. Honestly messaging these days is a mess

  • Teams and Slack for work
  • Whatapp and Discord for family, friends and interests/communities
  • Signal for the techsavy friends

Personally I think its ok for instances to delete older posts to save space provided that there are means to archive threads that users find valuable.
For fediverse to thrive it should be as easy as possible for people to setup and manage instances without having to think about the storage space too much.

Archival of historical content is something that I feel should be handled separately.
