I'm not doing it. No. Bad!

Schlemmy ,

Veritasum is amazing. Recently I rediscovered them with the video about the SAT question everybody got wrong. My mind was blow.

Schlemmy ,

And then you see Adam Savage geeking out, nearly in tears about gauge blocks in his workshop.

I was working in a restaurant and one day a regular invited us to his place for after work drinks. He opened the front door into a monumental hallway with beautiful winding stairs and a large mosaic monogram with his initials on the floor.

We went into the main living area with a professionally decked out open kitchen, a 20 person dining table and a seating area with 4 large Chesterfields. The whole room is filled with art and antiques.

He asked me if I wanted to pick a few bottles of wine because of my good taste ( I’m a trained sommelier). He then guided me to his library and opened a secret door that led into the wine cellar.

Every large winehouse in the world was represented and he insisted on picking whatever I wanted. The sheer amount of stacks of Mouton Rotschild premier Cru, Tenuta Dan Guido - Sassicaia… We opened 4 bottles that would’ve cost about 10.000 euros together. No sweat.

He told us that despite the nice kitchen he never cooks. He goes to restaurants every day and on the weekends he hires top chefs to cook for his guests.

Then he asked us if we would like to go and have lunch in Milan, the next day (I’m from Belgium). He chartered a heli and had extra space for 3 persons.

He’s a modest guy. Rides his bike everywhere and makes his money selling real estate. He only sells high value property like castles and works one day a week. He’s not extremely talented but admitted he’s just lucky.

I realized that to become rich, you need money. Whether it’s your own or someone else’s doesn’t matter, you just need a lot.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

Schlemmy ,

I mean, there are several FOSS transit apps around. The Netherlands, Germany,…

How does the day-to-day work of not wearing shoes in the house?

I have been reading a lot lately about not wearing outside shoes in the house and it interests me even more because I’ve been saving to re-carpet my whole house. It hits me every now and then about how to do things though, like, say I’m cooking all day on Sunday then need to take the trash out. I’m assuming it’s change...

Ingress. I was obsessed with it. Couldn’t stop playing.

Family trips were awkward. I would make detours and hide the reason but just pointed out there was something awesome they should see.

I also took part in global ops where I met irl with other players to move keys.

When I think about it the real life component of that game is amazing.

Schlemmy ,

If everyone goes in lockdown a few weeks should suffice but that’s the ideal scenario. Containment and immobility are the best ways to smother an outbreak.

Schlemmy ,

Exact. Quarantine only works when we all participate.

Schlemmy ,

By default in our country. You have to unregister if you don’t want it.

Would you think of words that you don't know, ending with "phile" as something sexual (or negative)?

I am looking for a name for an idea that I have for a website. It is a niche hobby, but there is a greek word for it that most people don’t know. Lets say its a book club and the word was Bibliophile or a music club called Melophile....

Schlemmy ,

No, because I’m no uncultured swine.

Schlemmy ,

How can one choose? It is so much connected to my mindset at the time of reading.

Schlemmy ,
  • The name of the wind - Patrick Rothfuss
  • Discworld series - Terry Pratchet
  • The city of the blind - José Saramago
  • The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
  • Cathedral of the sea - Ildefonso Fancones
  • Mythos - Stephen Fry
  • Catch-22 - Joseph Heller

I could go on for a while, I suppose. Every one of them has brought me joy reading. The discworld series are being reread at the moment and at every stage of my life the address me in a different way. The Little Prince is the one I would buy for everyone I know. In French because that works best.

Going postal is peak Moist.

I’ve followed Bregman from the start when he started writing for the Dutch news site De Correspondent. I love the positive vibe he sends.

And yes, Douglas Adams humor is snappy as ever in the Hitchhiker’s guide. ❤️

I’m not l proud. It’s Would I lie to you - Charles and Eddie

Don’t judge me. I was a child. A year later House music ruled my life.

My mom used to run the local café. From time to time customers gave me a coin for the Juke Box. I couldn’t read yet but B5 was Roy Orbison - You got it. Loved it.

My first thought went to Germany when I read your song.

That’s where Carlton’s got his ‘It’s not unusual’ dance from. Bruce Springsteen in Dancing in the dark.

On an unrelated matter. France needs to be thrown under the bus from time to time. They need the constant pressure of revolution to function properly.

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

I get sick from the sleazeball slimey replies like ‘‘I’m so happy to have been part of project a’’. People chiming in to shamelesly self promote on other people’s posts.

Schlemmy ,

I’m still a bit confused about the instances and the political alignment of people on certain instances. I’m on Lemmy.ml but apparently people can be quite toxic on that instance.

Having to subscribe to the same subject on different instances feels a bit weird. I always wonder what I’m missing out on.

It also seems like we’re missing some critical mass but I’m over Reddit, that’s the bottom line.

Schlemmy ,

It’s the best app when it comes to functionality. It has it all.

Schlemmy ,
  • You can schedule messages
  • Have supergroups, subgroups, broadcasts, admin roles in groups,…
  • Channels can be configured in various ways. For example, you can post messages and choose the type of previews links render.
  • You can add voting options to posts
  • Members of the channel can only reply in threads so the replies are bundled.
  • You can decide wheter new group members can view chat history or not.
  • Members can be muted.
  • Bots can be built withing the app
  • Chats can be arranged in folders *…

I could go on.

Schlemmy ,

I get it. That’s why I use Plus messenger. It’s a better, more customisable UI. Private chats, groups and channels are on a different page, if you want it.

Unfortunately I use Discord, WhatsApp, Signal, Element (Matrix) and SimpleX all combined because my contacts are spread out. Looking forward to secure interoperability.

Schlemmy ,

I’m on the waiting list. I hope they get e2ee sorted out.

What gets you downvoted?

What sort of post or comment gets you downvoted the most? Especially if you don’t think it’s bad behavior in the first place, or don’t care. Does not have to be on Lemmy, but we are here… One of the good things about Lemmy IMO is that it’s small enough to see the posts that are unpopular. If you do “Top Day” on...

Schlemmy ,

Opinions. People seem to hate opinions, whether they’re provided with an explanation or not. Facts are also downvoted on a regular base.

Schlemmy ,

Oh yeah. I’m pretty new to all of this but just mentioning the fact that the CCP is doing raunchy stuff got me downvoted to hell. Even when those replies were provided with links to articles and facts I am being called racist.

Schlemmy ,

Tried to follow the link but it’s not working.

Schlemmy ,

Jup, I’m a high functioning autist and especially in written discussions I tend to get misinterpreted. I doesn’t help that English is my 4th language either.

Schlemmy ,

It’s not going to work if the instances determine what behaviour is acceptable on Lemmy.

Schlemmy ,

Totalled my car three years ago. Never bothered buying a new one. I save a lot of money and accepting my faith when relying on public transport has given me so much mental freedom. I take the train to work and the last part of the route is by shared bikes. Love it.

Are we all fucked?

I’m worried for the world. All I’ve been thinking about is WW3 and this shit makes me want to vomit. I can’t even smoke weed anymore without having a near panic attack. I feel unmotivated. I wake up and immediately just want to go back to bed. I’m not trying to spread fear but the Doomsday clock is 90 seconds till...

Schlemmy ,

It’s true, but that makes it even more unsettling. Every petty crime gets blown up by media, every time something happens people start screaming that we need camera’s and more cops on the streets. I used to work in the bar scene in our city twenty years ago. There were bar fights on a regular base. Now one bar fight in a year makes the national news.

Schlemmy ,

Bitwarden can generate password phrases. Some other password managers too. In the occasion you have to type out your password a password phrase is a lot easier.

Schlemmy ,

You should indeed use a password manager to randomize the generated password phrases. Bitwarden adds capitals, numbers and other characters to the password phrases.

Schlemmy ,

Those government id based login methods are quite common and very secure. Belgium has a system that used your ID, your phone number and your phone to verify your login. A lot of EU banks have been using a OTP generated by a dedicated hardware that looks like a tiny calculator. The Netherlands has a dedicated app that is verified by your government id and that uses a qr to verify your identity.

Schlemmy ,

Thank God for GDPR. That would be impossible in the EU. ID’s can only used in very specific cases that are detailed in the law.

Schlemmy ,

I chose lemmy.ml when creating my account and apparently that instance is quite hostile if you don't buy into CCP propaganda.
