Their win is not that huge as far as current projections go. They'll grow, but the likely coalition is the current one.

Putting Trump in charge doesn't hold Democrats accountable. It would move them further to the right, which is the exact opposite of you want. They don't care about disinterested non-voters, they only care about courting those that do show up to vote.

Change needs to come from within. Organize within the DNC. Primary their candidates. That's how you get people like AOC elected. Once the primaries are over, there's no shot at moving them further left.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

There's no incentive for them to change course now. That ship has sailed. They know the alternative is Trump and that's objectively worse.

During primaries, you have power. There they can be voted out without Trump's spectre looming over the election.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

In a 2 party FPTP system, the people don't have that power. That's the point. The DNC can just shrug it off and say "okay, then Trump wins, and that's even worse". The DNC can survive a Trump term. Gaza may not.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

You're in a 2 party FPTP system, it doesn't give you reasonable representation by design.

You get someone you dislike and someone you dislike even more. Voting 3rd party is literally voting against your interests. That's not an ideological choice, or a political choice, it's a deeply saddening mathematical reality.

The only way you get your position heard is by fighting candidates for your least-disliked party during the primaries. Get someone you like as the congressional or senatorial candidate. Help them get elected. Even a small number of senators or congressmen can make the difference (see Synema and Manchin for example, or hell even Boebert and MTG who all wield(ed) significant political power well beyond what their voteshare should give them).

By fighting the fight you can't win (e.g. the vote for president), you only weaken your least-disliked choice. So whoever you really don't want ends up getting elected. Why? Because the US election system sucks balls.

Voting for the Green party makes it less likely that climate change legislation goes through. That is the sad, paradoxical reality. Being an ideological crusador in this matter doesn't help anyone and is due to the reality of the shit voting system, despite the best intentions, immoral.

The financial sector offers a magnitude more services than just "transactions". It's a stupid comparison.

Bombing a house in the middle of a residential area seems "reasonable"?

A judge and jury found the police department used unnecessary excessive violence and violated constitutional protections against unlawful searches.

I hope so, yes.

    Death is still a process. You may not be scared of what comes after death, but can still be scared of dying itself.

    Android has a garbage collector, meaning it requires an additional 2GB of RAM of overhead to keep things smooth. iPhones run significantly hotter than Androids, and consume more energy to achieve their performance gains.

    It’s not true to simply state “one is better than the other”. There’s various metrics in which either one may be better.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    Well, more RAM will always help. An iPhone with more RAM will allow it to perform better than one with less RAM. Similarly, too little RAM will hamper performance regardless of the device.

    Because the Kremlin would protect him and help him broadcast his message. It harms the US government, so the Kremlin sees providing Snowden with protection and a platform as an absolute win.

    Most other countries that are remotely aligned with the US might be pressured to keep Snowden quiet.

    Muhammad is a real warlord, we have historical evidence of the empire he conquered together. The main split between Sunnis and Shiites came to be because of who was supposed to succeed him.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    That’s been the assumption, but there’s surprisingly little actual evidence of him existing. The first bits of writing that seem to mention him are from a century after he supposedly lived. We also have no evidence that the NT contains eyewitness accounts, but we do have limited evidence that it might not be.

    In short, we don’t really know either way.

    Probably wise to help shoot as much as possible down. If they manage to get all of it and the attack causes no deaths, then it doesn’t give Netanyahu much political manoeuverability to opt for retaliatory strikes. That could deescalate things a bit, hopefully.

    Still, no clue how this will play out.

    You’re ignoring that the state should rectify unacceptable situations. With wrongful imprisonment, the state can rectify the situation and compensate the innocent. With the death penalty, this is never possible. And even if such a rectification is not done, at least the prisoner was still able to live somewhat of a life.

    This makes life imprisonment infintely more acceptable that the death penalty. There’s no doublethink in admitting there are different gradations of unacceptable.

    It’s confounding because Earth is heating up significantly faster than is currently explained by our climate models.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    We’re warming faster than every climate model, that’s the point. It’s going faster than the most pessimistic model right now, which is confounding. We can explain most of the warming, but there’s a bit that we can’t attribute to any known cause/.mechanism just yet.

    I wonder if Meta implemented a very basic “no porn keywords” filter. “Interracial” is quite a common keyword on porn websites, perhaps that’s why it won’t pick up on it well or wasn’t trained on images like it?

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    The article reads:

    When asked by CNN to simply generate an image of an interracial couple, meanwhile, the Meta tool responded with: “This image can’t be generated. Please try something else.”

    Which is what I’m referring to.

    Please, for the love of God, VOTE! ( pawb.social )

    I don’t like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    Democrats are unable to go further left because that risks losing votes to the GOP.

    In a 2-party system, you don’t get the choice you want to make. Instead, you have to vote against what you like least, in order to motivate that party to move. You vote dem, so the GOP is forced to change. The parties grow closer together, giving the democrats room to move further left.

    It’s a terrible system. The first candidate that wants to do election reform should be voted in ASAP.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    Obama was not exactly a progressive, was he? The GOP moved right because Trump pulled them there, and there was a voter base to use. They also had the opportunity, given that Clinton was not as popular as hoped. The media has been shifting rightwards as well. And they will keep moving right as long as they believe it will win them elections.

    I’m surprised you find that the gaps makes things feel less cluttered. Imo it looks considerably more cluttered.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    It’s additional space around components showing what’s behind it. So you’re seeing more stuff in between windows, making it look less organised imo. The “whitespace” isn’t really white here. It looks like another unnecessary element crammed inbetween two windows that might as well just sit neatly next to one another, making the windows slightly larger. I also like being able to move my mouse to the edge of things (e.g. the taskbar) without ending up in the whitespace, which causes misclicks for me.

    Again, my opinion. Not stating absolute truths here.

    It absolutely is enforceable, and the EU has already enforced it several times.

    The EU can of course try to seize assets, but in many cases they have signed a treaty with other countries stating they have the right to enforce the GDPR within their borders. Think a bit in the sense of an extradition treaty. For the US, this is the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for example.

    This means the EU absolutely can, will and has the means to enforce the GDPR abroad.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    GDPR applies regardless of any “business”. It applies to any entity processing personal data.

    Which is incredibly broad by the way. IP addresses and email addresses are personal data too. Same goes for “account data” in a broad sense. So Lemmy does collect personal data, and has to be compliant with the GDPR.

    Of course, for a fine there needs to be an investigation and the entity has to not comply with GDPR requests after a warning. And you’re absolutely right that devs can’t be sued for this, but the sysadmin running the instance can be. But that would only happen after GDPR noncompliance.
