So now the world watches what Russia does with the money. They spend it, that signals all Russian assets are toast.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Well there is something to be said for the rule of law, no?

I would suggest that the EU gets their ass in Gear and outlines a law that (narrowly) defines if and when frozen assets can be seized. For all I care they make a law specifying this time as a limited exception (but I could imagine several high level crimes like warcrimes could be added). Get it done.

I'd suggest adding a provision that if you want the frozen assets back you have to be personally present for a court hearing.

Well if in a conflict with the US someone throws up a gps jammer they will just obliterate it. The sheer width of their capabilities and strike ranges means that a device somewhere broadcasting gps signal to overpower actual gps will be a beacon for any number of long range weapons.

Combined with low visibility aircraft that can get closer.

This is not that that US.. but more to emphasize how much of the capabilities the Ukranians lack on that front.

‘How do you get hypothermia in a prison?’ Records show hospitalizations among Virginia inmates ( apnews.com )

The Virginia State Police investigator seemed puzzled about what the inmate was describing: “unbearable” conditions at a prison so cold that toilet water would freeze over and inmates were repeatedly treated for hypothermia....

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads ( www.techradar.com )

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

Several long term, at scale, contracts have been signed. Factories are scaling up, Europe is feeling the pressure. And with the absence of stocks these factories need to be producing at max capacity for a while to supply Ukraine and replenish stocks.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Hence the investments. They make sense. NATO has known for at least 2 decades their ammo stocks where insufficient for any prolonged conflict.

Narrator:

Politicians believed this type of conflict was of the past.

They where wrong.

I'm not looking forward to whole exclaves of Putin supporting ethnic Russians already fighting for independence while at the same time benefitting, to join the EU.

Edit: Transnistrië, not whole moldova.

Well, just show... It is a dangerous show then.

We already see what the effects of putinists in Hungary and Slovakia are having. It just has me worried.

Google should allow blacklists. The. A lot of sites will just be croudsourced to the round file.

They are incentivised to suggest sites with Google Ads in them.

Google unveils Veo, a high-definition AI video generator that may rival Sora ( arstechnica.com )

On Tuesday at Google I/O 2024, Google announced Veo, a new AI video-synthesis model that can create HD videos from text, image, or video prompts, similar to OpenAI's Sora. It can generate 1080p videos lasting over a minute and edit videos from written instructions, but it has not yet been released for broad use.

Until they sunset it. No use getting invested in new Google products anyway.

You are spreading Kremlin talking points. Spreading influence for a regime illegally trying to annex it's neighbor, razing cities, murdering civilians and kidnapping children.

You understand that is not Okay, right?

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

That's actually a cool idea. What inputs do you use. One from onboard and the other half from graphics card?

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Essentially that's mandated. Companies don't do it... But that is the law. And they can store a cookie with that info without requiring permission as it is essential to performing that action.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

I would expect a database of gunowner with serial numbers and for each weapon a ballistics profile.

Makes sense. There is a database of people with permits to operate and all ownerships including VIN of vehicles.. that's not weird either.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Sshhh.. never interrupt an adversary when they are making a mistake.

Further alienating disgruntled potential voters by making fun of them.. it's a bold strategy. Let's see if it pays off.

In the meanwhile, all the pro-palestine protesters now heard that even that miniscule tap on the brakes (which is a big signal in geopolitics) lead to a major flip out by the GOP.. so they might not like that Biden is not doing enough.. the GOP is now showing that if they are in power.. Israel will have a no limits friend.. who will not even speak out on bombing condensed civic centers.

"We have not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, but ultimately Ukraine has to make decisions for itself about how it's going to conduct this war," said Blinken, opening up the possibility of Western military materiel being used against Russian units located beyond Ukraine's borders.

This is actually pretty big. Kiev driving 2 himars to the north one with gmlrs and one atacms variant and the Belgorod region is pretty much f-ed

One possible explanation: He was not pro Russian enough, so the Kremlin martyred him giving the fire of his party extra fuel to grow and install an even more hardline putinist in his place.

I'd be interested in an investigation and prosecution of the decision makers at RBI.

That would be a nice catch. Them radars be rare and expensive.

Badeendje ,

I'm worried we might see mandatory minimum scenteces (pvv vvd and nsc are law & order types)

I'm not convinced they will do any meaningful thing on immigration. (Farmers and companies need cheap labor.. so vvd and BBB)

And the policy of cracking down on farmers overusing our countries natural resources will be stiffled by BBB.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I read it this morning. I was surprised that not a lot of the things I feared where in there. But at least all the stuff they don't like from previous governments will be scrapped without offering alternatives. And they will be handing out truckloads of cash to incentivise farmers to stop (breaking the law and overusing our natural resources).

But a collapse in 6 months, I doubt it. If anything Rutte has proven you can "govern" 16 years without actually achieving anything meaningful. They only got rid of stuff.. except for harsher punishments all around.. especially for citizens when making a mistake on forms.

I am glad Ukraine will be supported as pvv was against this. Also the nuclear powerplants are a good solution for baseload imho.. so that also seems good. I just hope they put them out at sea on new island(s).

We will see.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

The Ukraine is the Russian way of referring to the country. That is why this has mostly disappeared in western media. In German many countries get an article so the translation is indeed tricky as it puts back something in English that refers to something the Ukranians requested to be removed.

But in German it is indeed the normal way of referring to countries. You also provided an eloquent response.. keep being awesome!

Pretty funny come to think of this... I can imagine stuff like this can really blow out of proportion in official talks.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Oh pipe down. Biden has been tasked with trying to undo the continuous damage the GOP guided by Trump are doing to the international stability.

Under Trumps influence the world has dramatically destabilized and everyone is rearming. Old conflicts are brewing, the political right is on the rise.

And everyone is seeing on display that the so called greatest country on earth is inept in holding a former president accountable for an insurrection he manufactured.

During trump's presidency the world has seen the blatant lies or alternative facts and how much they pay off.. every accusation they make is an admission.

Narcissists and psychopaths are having a field day being out and open, since their emperor has shown that if you are brazen enough, noone can touch you.

But go ahead.. spin your narrative.

A situation a human would have easily navigated.

This whole alpha testing driverless vehicles on the public road is bullshit.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

If there are tests on public roads, there should be independent government oversight financed by a fee on the company testing. Not to mention there should be special insurance by the company.

The government should mandate telemetry, reporting and safety precaution standards that have to be followed. This will allow the government to also learn as these systems become more commonplace.

But that is my opinion.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, these organizations have been gutted over the years in the name of small government. To the point that they do not have the Manpower to actually properly regulate or oversee.

I'm talking about a dedicated team of specialists that oversee these kind of processes. These specialists don't come cheap.

The fee is paid to the federal government and should be sufficient for the government to finance the oversight of innovation like this.

@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar
