I don’t care how it connects and really wish we’d get some originality and new ideas in Hollywood instead of recycling and sequel-Ing the same old shit over and over. What made movies great before is that they left you wanting more. What sucks about movies today is that they shove it so far down your throat, so often that you have no time to digest or enjoy or want another bite.

Running through my mental checklist:

Alien - 10/10

Aliens - 11/10 - dialled it up a notch.

Alien^3 - 4/10 - you little bitch, killing off Hicks and Newt offscreen. Looked nice though.

Alien Resurrection - 2/10 - Wait, how do we get Ripley back?

Alien vs. Predator - 1/10 - Just dog crap.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - 1/10, same.

Prometheus - 5/10. Needed a bit explaining that the only scientists willing to go on a 4+ year mission completely blind were the STUPID ones.

Alien: Covenant - 2/10 - I don't remember, did I actually WATCH this? I seem to remember being disappointed that they didn't follow up on the promise of Prometheus by finding the Engineers.

Revonult ,

I really like Alien Vs Predator but I acknowledge its a terrible alien movie and terrible predator movie. I just like seeing two big screen movie monsters fight it out. Like Godzilla and King Kong or other crazy crossovers.

burgersc12 ,

Alien vs Predator is a solid 6/10, requiem is like a 3/10 wish i could fucking see the final fight ffs

TheFriar ,

But I’m sure this new installment on an old IP will be another 10/10. We’re gonna break the cycle and then every new remake and continuation will be good until the rest of time and all of our childhood memories will be restored and no longer pissed on and then they’ll remake Spider-Man for a seventh time and it’ll be the greatest movie ever and then we can finally increase the production of new takes on old IPs and we will have endless, engaging movies and well all start spending the $18 for a ticket to watch a movie in the theaters again and climate change will reverse itself and we can increase our carbon output because it turned out that we weren’t released “too much” co2 into the atmosphere, we weren’t releasing enough!

ours ,

Covenant was so brilliant it went with the "let's kill off some of the protagonists offscreen" of Alien 3 again! Such a great movie to require watching a video on Youtube to understand that and just ignoring the path they were on in the previous movie.

The trailer for Prometheus is one of the biggest catfish movie swindle experiences I've ever had. I was enthralled by that trailer, I remember how excited I was when buying tickets to see it and getting in our seats. As the movie went on, reality set in. There are some cool scenes but they are so engulfed by insane choices and boring nonsense that I hope the How Did This Get Made podcast (the podcast that reviews 'bad' movies) does an episode on it someday.

I do think Fede Alvarez will do extremely well with the visuals after Evil Dead (2013), but Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise sequel was far better at mixing the wild and crazy stuff the franchise was originally known for with modern, shocking visuals. My guess is they'll keep the story reeled in and focus on iconic tropes and scenes in Alvarez's style, keeping it more safe and simple which is fine. But I'm all out of excitement and will just wait and see what actually does come of this.

Speaking of, Prometheus was so hard to sit through that I never watched Covenant because of my fear of seeing those elements continued, even with how much I like Danny McBride. Watching Shane Black's The Predator that released a year afterward did not help revive a lot of interest in that movie universe for me either. I've heard a lot of takes but I'm curious, would anyone here recommend watching Covenant?

Insheets ,

Covenant imho was the worst of all the alien movies.

@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

I think I'll keep it on my "movies I'm not in any hurry to see but will probably check out someday" list right where it's been then.

If Prometheus was a 5, Covenant was a 3

Wouldn't recomend Covenant, although it's better than Prometheus, but I would recomend Prey (2022), the one of the last Predator movies that's completely bonkers in many directions. It's filmed in american natives' language, placed in 1791, and have a lot of immersing scenes with fights with wild animals as well as gags horror enjoyers would love - like throwing a beartrap right into the face. I don't know your taste, but I hold this lesser budget and alternative thing as a new breath into the franchise.

LemmySoloHer ,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yes! I was very intrigued when it was announced and I actually added it to the "My Stuff" section on Hulu when it released but didn't get around to watching it and totally forgot about it. Thank you for the reminder, I'm marking this as the next movie I watch for sure!

DragonTypeWyvern ,

So, you know how they fuck up in Alien because they're space truckers, and in Prometheus they run away from rolling ships in a straight line?

In Covenant, they're a terraforming crew of elite scientists that are dumber than all of that put together. You will facepalm in the opening, and actively hope these dummies die.

On the other hand, it has actual Engineer lore drops, and I like that, even if they never make any fuckin sense.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

In my head canon that movie is set in the Idiocracy universe and those were the smartest people they could find.

LemmySoloHer ,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you for the heads up -- this is exactly the kind of thing I wish I had known going into Prometheus. Just expecting something different made the facepalms more than I can handle. I feel like knowing what to expect is going to make it so I can check out Covenant at some point without the accompanying let down that.

Are you talking about the Peter Weyland TED talk? If so, its still the best trailer I've ever seen. Which makes the crime of the movie Prometheus that much more egregious.

LemmySoloHer ,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

This too! I was actually thinking about the theatrical trailer but I was so hyped for the movie that I watched this a dozen times beforehand too. I don't know why but I thought we'd see some more of this kind of stuff in the actual movie and was surprised that Guy Pearce was in makeup to look 104 years-old for the entirety of it instead.

mPony ,

alright I'll say it: you should still watch Covenant. Yes the script is kinda lacking, but it's lacking in ways that are different than how the script for Prometheus was lacking. There are sincere attempts to explain why things in the Alien universe are the way they are. Plus you only have to watch it once.

Opafi ,

But that's not what made the original movies great. Not at all. A lot of stories are great because they do not tell certain aspects. Explaining it all just leaves you with nothing left to explore.

Being naked isn't hot. Being partly dressed and suggestive is hot. You need to leave some things hidden to make it interesting.

LemmySoloHer ,
@LemmySoloHer@lemmy.world avatar

I definitely plan to get around to it now. Talking this out here kind of made me realize one of my big frustrations with Prometheus was how excited I was for it and how high my expectations were. Being able to go into Covenant without a surplus of hope and instead set realistic expectations will probably make it more of a throwaway watch if anything, instead of a big let down.

Fede Álvarez did good with Evil Dead and Don't Breathe so cautious optimism could apply here
