Sir, this is a steak house. We have hundreds of baby cows come here every year.

Is this the beginning of a horror movie?

But will it still think this is car traffic?

Switched to Linux in 2005 or 2006. Been missing Winamp ever since. :) Finally.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I did, mostly Audacious and Amarok. But, deserved or not, winamp has a special place in the heart of almost everyone in my generation.

I am just coming from a thread discussing voting for Biden or not is okay under the current circumstances. Reality meets fiction.

Lol, they used a "learning algorithm" for something we solved decades ago? The responsible engineer needs to get his degree revoked...

Is this really new? Haven't they been using soft computing methods since, basically forever?

A (single use) water bottle with a sport cap is basically a portable bidet. One can even easily adjust the water pressure.

I think regardless of the platform it will get ugly when topics are controversial. How ugly it gets is mostly depending on the level of moderation. It doesn't need many trolls or ill willing people to derail a discussion among hundreds of good meaning people.

We also tend to concentrate on the things we consider unfavorable. If among 100 comments 5 are sexist, these 5 will get far more attention than the other 95.

I mean, I've seen people uttering death threads on YouTube, because the YouTuber used butter in a recipe, not margarine. One of several hundred comments under that video, but the only one I remember...

Is it worse than AliExpress?

menemen ,

OK, great. I occasionally order at AliExpress and was kind of tempted to try Temu, because of the hype. WIll skip it then.

All those old school (former) linux devs used to play DnD back in the 80s, right? Hmm. Satanic panic 2.0?

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees ( arstechnica.com )

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company's return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

Worst are the meetings of international work groups. Stressful travel, being away from the family for days, sitting in a shitty meeting room talking about the same shit you talk about online and then sitting with a bunch of people getting senseless drunk, cringing constantly. I hate those meetings.

Used to be so awesome during corona. Took 4-6 hours, comfortably sitting in my home office, now it takes 3 days costing maybe 50,000€, instead of 0€, without more results.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

100% homeoffice jobs are incredibly rare in Germany. I have 50% homeoffice which is quite good for German standards. Even at the height of Corona the offices weren't empty here.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Lockdowns here were kinda half assed. We didn't really have full lockdowns like e.g. Italy. Germans love work. :)

I only had New York style pizza in the US and thought the US pizza game isn't that bad.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, beards are in fashion for several years now, aren't they?

I personally started growing a beard, because my skin is easily irritated and I don't like walking arround looking like a pizza. Luckily I also think I look better with a short, well kept full beard. Beards either take time or look like shit though in my experience.

I still have my 3310, but lost the charger. So I don't know if it is still working.

My children now use what is basically a cheap 3310 copy (also from Nokia, no internet).

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Lol thanks. But I am in Germany. :)

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I really like to ride the tramway, but they are loud and dirty. I also fear every morning, when my children have to cross the tracks on their way to school, since a child was run over by one a year ago. I am somewhat torn here between tramways and busses therefore.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

A street can easily handle bikes and public transit if it is well planned. But I also lean towards busses and subways, tramways only where it can be isolated from other traffic.

Also, on busy streets bycicles and scooters should have their own lane. Streets too small for that shouldn't be busy...

VIRTUAL SPRING
Woman and man sitting in Adirondack chairs on their back porch as a leaf blower wails in the background
REEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Woman: The moment it’s warm enough to enjoy the spring, the leaf blowers start up.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Woman: Not only are they loud, they’re poisoning workers with exhaust, spraying dust, allergens and fecal matter everywhere, and spewing tons of CO2 during a climate emergency.
All to blow a few blades of grass off a driveway!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Man: What you need are noise-canceling earbuds and birdsong recordings to re-create the joys of a suburbanized spring.
Softer REEEEEEE
Woman, wearing earbuds with birds tweeting around head: Ah, the late anthropocene…

The ACs were my biggest culture shock when I visited the US during summer. Everywhere was so fucking loud. Drove me crazy.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I am always surprised when I visit friends in the suburban parts of Germany. We live in an appartment in the middle of the city and it is so much calmer here. :)

But German suburbia at least has sundays when lawnmower (etc.) are illegal to be used.

I managed to almost completly keep my children away from it for now (8 and 10). But it is a struggle. And I will soon lose that struggle. So many children at age 8 or 9 have smartphones for fs sake.

I plan to slowly introduce them to stuff like this, so they will be able to deal with it. I did so rather successfully with the other bullshit, like Roblox. They are only allowed to play it when I am in the room, and I check that they follow that rule (they do).

Feels like walking on the edge though. Still unsure when to open the TikTok thing. Too early is bad, but too late and they will somehow already he on tiktok and I just don't know about it.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I'd add the "have clear rules" concept to this and enforce the rules. Don't be wishy washy. But communicate the rules and be prepared to explain the rules.
But also accept that theory and practice are not the same. Imo you should allow them enough, that they don't isolated from their friends experiences. That is why I allow them to play Roblox under supervision or why I set up a Minecraft Server so that they can play online with their friend in a safe environment (but only on weekends for a fixed time period).

For 200-250$ you can get very decent used compact cameras (like the RX 100). It won't upload the photos immediatly, but it is still pretty much on par with most current cell phones.

There have been fascist psychopaths arround as long as humans exist. BUT: when a fascist psychopath gets support among important figures of the industrial and financial sector, that is when you should start to panic.

menemen ,

I am not contradicting you, but added my thoughts to your argument. I just started this by summarizing the parts of your argument to which I wanted to add.

I hate tiktok. I am not from the US, but banning the app that is most popular among young people while raiding dozens of university campuses? Don't sound like a great way to get young people trust the system...

The US at least has some degree of control over Microsoft. How much worse is that the EU is still not developing an own OS/distro?

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that was a shame. But I really think we’d need a shared OS for all administration units of the EU (from EU level down to munipiality levels). Would be much easier as the private sector could also adjust to it.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I am not talking about a OS for the general public, but specifically for the administration.

And this will work much better with a unified attempt. If the EU would be taking OpenSuse for this, this would basically be the end of OpenSuses independence… I’d like it to be GNU/Linux based though.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Dumb phone exist. My children got their dumb phones when they started walking to school on their own (so they can call us in case of a problem).

No internet, only 4 harmless games and I can control which numbers are allowed to call them and which numbers they are allowed to call.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

And there is no internet to look up anything. ULTRAHARD!

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

True to a degee, but too many international journalists still depend on that plattform. Makes it hard to ditch it completly, until finally one of the alternatives really pick up.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Let’s hope. But they have to change the way that likes are shown. It always feels lonely over there.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I don’t like metal and still considered them to be a mostly apolitical group of weird nerds. But it probably fits to the general trend of neonazis trying to infiltrate and overtake other subcultures. Oi! just doesn’t draw large crowds I guess, probably Punk rock in general is not such a big thing anymore?

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

It makes sense that those types would join the punk /metal scene.

They are since 40+ years, The skinhead subculture is part of the punk scene. And Neonazis usurped that subculture for a long time (not so much nowadays though).

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I was addressing that Neonazis usurped the Skinhead subculture for a long time. The skinhead subculture is part of the punkrock scene. Most of punkrock was always leftist though, at least here in Europe. I think you’ll have to try hard to find a rightwing skinhead nowadays though. A switch towards Metal sounds like an almost natural thing for the neonazi scene. Metalfans should try their best to stop that or it might destroy the whole subculture.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, as I said “Neonazis usurped the Skinhead subculture” in the 80s. There have always been apolitical and left wing skinheads, though. Nowadays the Skinhead subculture seems to be mostly dead (the whole punk scene has declined massively) and the few remaining appear to be almost completly apolitical and left wing.

I am not a big Matrix fan, so maybe my knowledge about the films (I saw 1 and 2, both only once) might be too limited. But I completely fail to understand the symbology.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

The Character Switch was originally supposed to be a man in the real world and a woman when plugged in to the matrix.

This would have been a clear symbol.
