Has anyone tried the DE for in the recent years?

How was the experience?

@linux

lemmyreader ,

This brings back some memories from years ago. Enlightenment was fairly popular at some point and I think the author "Rasterman" was employed at RedHat. Some Linux distribution may even have had it as the default ?

Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

Well, if you read some more of jwz's blog posts about the horrible security bugs that others have added while creating derivatives of Xscreensaver you might think twice before doing so. https://www.jwz.org/blog/2021/01/i-told-you-so-2021-edition For me a screensaver is no longer about trying to prevent dead pixels (or something like that) but being able to safely lock the screen when being away from it for a while.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

    Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

Nice project. I like the nostalgia. 👍

After some searching I learned that Tripod and Angelfire still exist today as web hosting providers. Your page could have a few more Under construction signs here and there.

Apparently my love language is installing @linux on the laptops of people I really care about.

    lemmyreader ,

These days installing Linux and upgrading it is easier than it was years ago. Installing Linux can be a good deed indeed :)

got told to crosspost over here to reach more people:

I don't know if and how crossposting functions in kbin/lemmy, so hopefully it'll work that way

    lemmyreader ,

You could try this The OP installed the drivers from an older iso and then upgraded. Manjaro Linux is not very much liked by many but you could give it a try. If it works you can go for plain Arch or EndeavourOS. From what I found the closed source Nvidia driver exist since 2022 so don’t use an iso that is too old :-)

    lemmyreader ,

    👍

    lemmyreader ,

Lots of people to the time to reply here and at kbin.

It probably will not hurt to also ask on superuser.com stackexchange.com and Reddit linuxquestions or another appropriate subreddit. To me it seems like Discord is similar like IRC : questions will get snowed under after others write newer things and your reading audience is likely decreasing.

And a question : What are your plans with Linux on your desktop ?

    • Gaming ?
    • Coding ?
    • Reading books and watching videos ?
    • Web surfing ?
    • Social media ?

If you are interested in learning more Linux then a refurbished laptop is a good start to run Linux natively without a dual boot.

    lemmyreader ,

Don‘t get me wrong, I‘m not complaining at all, in contrary, I am enormous grateful for any help I get. I posted alread in reddit as well - subreddits r/Nobara, r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions Asus-Linux has a thready-like area in their discord „general-issues“, where I made the thread…

    Cool. 👍

At first it is to learn how everything behaves, test my use-cases to see, if linux could become an all-dayer for me - that would be the main goal - until then the dual-boot to have a fallback option.

In that case, VirtualBox and other emulators could be useful to look into. And WSL may be limited (I’ve read) but also useful. Never tried WSL but a friend of mine is happy with it.
