@molly0xfff do we know how Beacon works under the hood? I've seen other independent creators do a similar thing using a Patreon white-label service called Memberful. Ad-free versions of their shows, access to their private Discord server, etc. And to the customer it looks like you've signed up for their service, as opposed to being a patron on Patreon.
i'm sure it was a major and scary decision to branch out to their own platform, but the precarity of building on third-party platforms like twitch/youtube really can't be overstated
@molly0xfff I do not consume their content but I do thank them for causing the word “precarity” to enter my vocabulary, which macOS spell check doesn't know is a word.
@steveriggins@molly0xfff that’s because it is “precariousness”. But I’m taking “precarity” because if Cory Doctorow can give us “enshittification” then Molly totally gets a pass.
@molly0xfff it's actually easier than it sounds nowadays; aws has productised and platformised both twitch and prime video and will happily sell you either or both, at rock bottom prices. it's not exactly install wordpress easy but it’s no longer 'need at least five specialists’ hard
I've mostly only supported them through merch/etc since I'm always hopelessly behind on current seasons and don't need the early release, but now that it's going to them directly (and hopefully encouraging them and others to try these models) it's a no brainer sub
@molly0xfff Oh dropout is great! So many good shows! Also a few that don't hit the mark for me, but the overall quality of content is extremely impressive!
@molly0xfff im also way, way behind on their content - mainly because I'm a Pathfinder guy more than D&D, and i really enjoy Hideous Laughters podcasts more, but the critical role team is great.
@molly0xfff Same, I’m behind on the current season but immediately subscribed! I’m hoping this gives them the financial stability to be able to try different things, maybe branch out creatively (similar to Dropout).
@molly0xfff
One answer to that perennial problem is: don't. Start building with p2p as soon as you can and support those who are building #p2p platforms you might use in future, such as #Autonomi.
@molly0xfff I’ve watched enough podcasts by YouTubers talking shop to know that they really hate being beholden to an opaque algorithm that can change with little or no notice, a vague content management system that can block or restrict your work for unclear reasons, and a DMCA system that can take down your work by people under no obligation to prove they hold a copyright to your work.
