NaibofTabr , in Telegram CEO calls out rival Signal, claiming it has ties to US government

The CEO also claims that users' Signal messages have popped up in court cases or in the media, and implies that this has happened because the app's encryption isn't completely secure. However, Durov cites "important people I've spoken to" and doesn't mention any specific instance of this happening.

[...]

The Register could not find public reports of Signal messages leaking due to faulty encryption.

Claims made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

Durov's entire criticism seems to be based on implications and have no actual evidence of any technical problems with Signal. He's basically just throwing shade at a competing business, which amounts to whining.

Funny how first association is "end-to-end encryption is broken" and not, you know, that whoever used the message got hold of one of the "ends".

PotatoesFall , in Telegram founder and CEO alledges signal has backdoors, they don't provide reproduceible builds, etc.

Okay first things first Jack Dorsey is a tool

The US government / CIA did in fact develop the protocol back in the day, with the goal of helping people in China and other countries message securely, probably with ulterior motives.

But the protocol itself is open source, and you can use it without any affiliation with the US government.

The claim " It looks almost as if big tech in the US is not allowed to build its own encryption protocols that would be independent of government interference 🐕‍🦺" is therefore so stupid it almost invalidates everything else being said because the person writing is either an idiot or purposely misrepresenting the facts.

Not having reproducible builds is definitely weird though. Does anybody have more information on that?

My theory is that apple wont let the developer share there code for IOS because of "security"

I remember an emulator (retro arch i think?) Got on ios at one point and was later removed because it showed apples file system layout. Which apples reason was "because it could be used to make malware for IOS"

I feel like there is some similar thing with signal IOS

They boast this as a feature, but on the instructions for how to do this for iOS, even Telegram admits "As things stand now, you'll need a jailbroken device, at least 1,5 hours and approximately 90GB of free space to properly set up a virtual machine for the verification process". Browsing the steps, it's extremely complex, and doesn't seem like something that is very user friendly and that you'd do weekly or monthly when a new version is released.

On the GitHub issue linked to in the body, it's disingenuous to claim they refused to implement this, and that the technical hurdles Apple has in place make this extremely difficult which halted progress. In the community forums where the conversation was moved to, someone pointed out that even if you were to reproduce it on a jailbroken iPhone, that there's no way to confirm that non-jailbroken iPhones aren't receiving a version with a backdoor.

And even if you are using a jailbroken device exclusively and can confirm the reproducibility of the iOS app, then the risk becomes the latest available jailbroken iOS could be outdated from the real versions, and you'd have other issues with not receiving timely security updates. This same issue applies to Telegram also.

Heliboard is just perfect

Evil_Shrubbery , (edited )

Yes, this.

Highly customisable, fast, multi language (so you don’t have to switch), and you can even load in (a degoogled, but still proprietary) swiping library - so it swipes like gboard, looks however you like, it’s fully local, and it’s open.

Earlier this month they published 1.0 alpha but do install the 1.2 version from github for easier future updates (new signature): github/Helium314/HeliBoard.

SnokenKeekaGuard ,
@SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

DreadPotato ,
@DreadPotato@sopuli.xyz avatar

How do you get the auto correct / language support to actually work? It’s less than useless for me, it hardly ever provides suggestions or corrects typos and doesn’t recognise a lot of regular words. Adjusting the aggressiveness/confidence in the settings does absolutely nothing.

Evil_Shrubbery ,

Idk, it works for me perfectly (I assume you downloaded necessary dictionaries).

Maybe it’s the learning type and still learning? I only ever added a few words to the dictionary and all of those are bcs I intentionally spell them wrong.

Also iirc you can set it to automatically add words to your dictionary after a certain number of times you typed it (eg if I type twice snailporn the third time should be suggested or considered while gesturing).

DreadPotato ,
@DreadPotato@sopuli.xyz avatar

I have, it’s really not very good IMO. It’s half decent in English. but it sucks ass in my native language, half the suggestions it’s giving are completely wrong or nonsensical in the context of the sentence.

Evil_Shrubbery ,

My native language is pretty niche, and I have since remembered that I did have a few funny suggestions at the beginning, however I now dont really differentiate between Heli & g. But the same goes for gboard & Swyft, it needs a few weeks at the beginning.

Also info about my use - I never have autocorrect on (only suggestions), mostly use gestures, and dont use the system personal dictatory but the one in Heli folders.

Yesterday I’ve uninstalled 1.0, installed 1.2, and restored a backup. Works just like before.

LiveLM ,

The Swype library really saved my ass, I was still holding onto Gboard because of it

boyi ,

I tried to switch to heliboard using multiple languages but its predictions is simply out of league compared to SwiftKey. Reluctantly, I switched back.

Nima ,
@Nima@lemmy.world avatar

I just grabbed it from your suggestion. my gods I forgot how nice it is to have a keyboard with autocorrect that works properly.

thank you very much. this is a fantastic little keyboard and I’m excited to finally replace Swiftkey. cause it’s really been bad for a while.

thanks again 🙏

Nomad ,

Is has actually usable offline swype. With third party library though.

MadBob ,

I see that’s a fork of Openboard, which I have, but I don’t really use it because it keeps suggesting American spellings (sometimes alongside British spellings), and my thumbs are too mighty to use a mobile phone keyboard without the suggestions. Would you happen to know if Heliboard fixes this?

N4CHEM ,

I have Heliboard set to English (UK) and it suggests British spellings (highlighting the American ones as typos), so I think you should be good. However, I’m not sure if the spellings come from my phone’s system or from the keyboard…

I would nevertheless recommend trying it: it has some very nice improvements over OpenBoard and is under active development, so you could request new features or report bugs and expect them to be taken care of.

MadBob ,

I’m convinced!

nevetsg ,

Hello, I have search F-Droid app and get no results for Heliboard. Any idea what I could be missing?

@kirbowo808@kbin.social avatar

With all the changes that Reddit has made recently esp with the API changes, it definitely did leave salt in my mouth alongside how increasing toxic the Reddit community had become in comparison to when I joined the community but the small niche communities that existed on Reddit did honestly made it harder to quit due to the lack of communities outside, which is another big problem with centralisation, esp in the modern internet as it makes you rely on platforms you may not necessarily like due to big issues like social isolation etc.

When I found out about this, this isn’t simply excusable anymore and I would rather delete my account over having my personal data being sold for profit (which goes completely against the early ethos of Reddit as a whole but being semi owned by Conde Nast, this would have been inevitable) despite the fact that I have been thinking about deleting my Reddit profile way before this issue.

Surprisingly, I honestly have had no regrets deleting Reddit out of my life and honestly I do wish I would have done it sooner, I’m far less frustrated, I’m starting to think more constructively again and I feel way way less dependent on it.

Can say, I made a good choice there tbh.

I use cash exclusively at liquor stores and fast food joints and have for years. Sounds like I should expand the list.

secretlyaddictedtolinux , in Is Privacy Worth It?

I think the article was bad because it underestimates the risk in certain situations. Facebook logs everything. If you are a teenage girl who is 17 and use Facebook all the time, then turn 18 and get an unwanted pregnancy and live in Texas and then stop using Facebook while going to the abortion clinic out of state, or log in once while out of state with an out of state IP or using a VPN but with a much longer ping time or different data center that Facebook then logs (and to think they don't log ping times is naive), that information could be requested by Texas authorities to try to prosecute the 18 year old female for getting an abortion. Although that's not likely to happen just yet in 2024, we don't know what political environment will exist in the future. The idea that this is all meaningless for many people ignores the fact that terrible situations don't often warn you in advance that they are coming and sometimes happen fast.

Ilandar , in Is Privacy Worth It?

That was an excellent read. I have often wondered myself how other people are going when I see them so adamant that they'll never use a mainstream social media/messaging service ever again and now refuse to be friends with anyone who does. I've heard "if my friends won't value my privacy, they're not real friends", or variations of it, so many times in privacy communities.

I love my private lifestyle. I feel like I actually control my own life, that I'm not being held at gunpoint or dependent or actively surveiled 24/7 by 100 different soulless corps. it feels so peaceful. The parts I cannot control, like cellular, I always treat like an open public square.

So yes, when you just get into a routine, instead of making everything into a fucking war, it's quite nice. people who say it's exhausting try to do too much at once or just let fear rule them. Privacy, especially technologically, has honestly never been easier than it is now.
